This barbera from the boutique winery of the Giribaldi family is sourced from a tiny 1.6 hectare vineyard in Alba sitting at 360 metres about sea level. The grapes are grown organically, gently fermented and left to rest for over a year in a mix of old and new barrels. In the glass, the wine is ruby red with a nose of vanilla and marmalade. There’s spice, tobacco, more vanilla and plenty of blue fruits on the palate. It’s easy enough to just drink, but there’s a heap to ponder if you want to get into it.

With dolcetto, it’s all about the purity of fruit and texture. Giribaldi's Calúpo comes from an organic vineyard sitting at 460 metres above sea level over calcareous and rocky soil. Once pressed and fermented, the wine spends a couple of months in large format barrels to settle and add a bit of layering of flavours. The nose is of violets and the palate is all cherries and earthiness. It finishes soft, dry and clean, exactly how fine dolcetto should.

- Corbières
This lovely red is from Corbières, which is one of the warmer areas in France, resulting in a slightly richer and more powerful wine. It’s made from 30% syrah, 30% grenache and 40% carignan. The syrah brings spice and acid, the grenache brings jubey red fruits and the carignan adds an opulence and purple fruits. It’s medium, bordering on full body, full of dark red fruits, spice and lovely drying tannins. It’s sure to be a great drink over the next 5 years.

This is an early-released wine in the ‘joven’ style from Bodegas Forcada in Rioja, who specialise in old vine tempranillo and grenache. Bristling with jubilant cherries and sizzling with exotic spices, it’s perfect for seasoning your snags with every mouthful. 90% tempranillo, filled out with a few splashes of grenache for a bit of plumpness to the palate. Enjoy freely, pour liberally, and laugh heartily!

- Valencia
This is a simple and delicious take on the well-known GSM blend, famous from Rhône to McLaren, and just as good in the mid-east of Spain! This version is a touch reductive, leading into a deep and dark nose, then heaps of berries. It has a light-medium body with grainy tannin and more power then you'd expect. Decant and watch this one sing!

This Flying Solo red from Domaine Gayda is a 60/40 blend of grenache and syrah from Minervois, one of the top areas in the Languedoc. It’s medium-bodied with soft tannins, a smooth palate and an energetic burst of bright red fruits. Simply enjoyable, gluggable and relax-on-the-deck-able wine.
