Karel, the self-titled Chairman of the Mofo Wine Team, is excited about this wine. How do I know? Because he said “I’M SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS WINE.” He’s just finalised a big purchase of Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Domaine Tour Saint Michel and this ‘15 vintage is one of the beauties that has made its way across the seas. Rocking 93 points from Robert Parker, 91 from Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Cellar Insider and Wine Spectator, as well as 90 from Vinous and a 16+/20 from Jancis Robinson, this is expressive, well-balanced wine that’s concentrated, full-bodied and packed with red fruits. It’s a guaranteed palate pleaser, a good wine for anyone keen to dip their palate into Southern Rhône.

Cuvée du Vatican have friends in seriously high places. Theirs was the first case of Châteauneuf-du-Pape that Robert Parker ever bought, and is the wine largely credited with launching his now decades long career. But even ol’ Parksy pales in comparison to their most famous fan: the Pope. Since 1958, when Pope John XXIII blessed Cuvée du Vatican, the label’s been a papal favourite and they still send a case to Rome every year. This is a powerful, rich vino worthy of its fans, featuring aromas of red and dark fruits with a rich, ripe palate packed with dark fruits, spice and soft tannins.

Robert Parker

When asked about this wine, our buyer John told us it’s “hands down one of the best wines I’ve bought, simply stunning.” Now that’s a massive call, but John is the kinda guy who puts his money where his mouth is. Probably because all his money turns into wine. He is, however, backed up by 96 points from Decanter, 94 from Robert Parker, 94 from Vinous and four Gold Medals, so we trust him. A blend of 45% grenache, 30% mourvedre and 25% syrah, this ‘15 vino is a modern style showing a touch of oak as well as a heap of blackberry, black raspberries, licorice and herbs. At 15.5% it’s a strongy, but it’ll go perfectly with all your red meat dishes, a bit of cheese or your best Mediterranean dish.

This aged Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a brilliant blend of 75% grenache, 20% syrah and a splash of mourvedre and cinsault. It’s “sleek and focused, with dark cassius, plum sauce and graphite notes,” according to Wine Spectator, who gave it 91 points along with Stephen Tanzer. Robert Parker, who called this “beautifully put together,” dished out 90 points thanks to “aromas of creamy berry fruit, liquorice and exotic spice as well as medium-bodied, texture and rich palate.” Jancis Robinson got in on the act with a 17/20, hailing the “rather sophisticated winemaking,” so it’s safe to say we’ve got a mighty strong consensus here.

This cracking Châteauneuf du Pape is, as Robert Parker puts it, brilliant. A blend of 90% grenache and 10% syrah, it’s medium-bodied, juicy, elegant and approachable – just like my ideal partner. Parker gave this 91 points, calling it “upfront and approachable” with “toasted bread, caramelised meats and spice on the nose.” Vinous, who also gave it 91 points, was sold on a juicy wine with “vibrant raspberry and bitter cherry flavours.”

Red wine from the Rhône comin’ at ya, a brilliant blend from the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation to be precise. It’s packed with blackberry, blackcurrant, cherry and licorice, a medium to full-bodied wine that’s 75-25 grenache-syrah. It’s copped 91 points from both Wine Spectator and Vinous, 90 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and a 17/20 from Jancis Robinson, with Wine Advocate calling it “a screaming success in the vintage.”
