2018 was the vintage that Tassie winemakers dreamed of. Just enough rain and a long, sunny autumn. Perfect for those slow-ripening cool climate grapes. This chardonnay was hand-picked, whole-berry pressed and sent straight to barrel to ferment with wild yeast. Nine months resting on lees has built texture and complexity, resulting in a delicious wine spanning the spectrum from apple to stone fruit to nectarine to flint. A bit of vanilla and spice from the oak shines through as well.

If there’s one thing we know, it’s that our mofos love a little bit of Margaret River chardy. We’ll give you fair warning: this is not for the lovers of big and buttery. Don’t get us wrong, this goes some of the way there, seeing 9 months in partially new French oak and constant lees stirring (to get all that yeasty, toasty flavour). What is outstanding about this drop is the delightful acid line that cleans the palate in one foul swoop. Or should we say sip. Lemon, grapefruit, and minerality are the stars of the show, with a lingering touch of vanilla and almond. When you’re craving the lighter and the brighter, this is the one for you.

The Yarra Valley is a prized wine-growing region, steeped in delightful ‘cool-climate’ quality (we hardly need to point out the obvious, friends). Yet, even knowing this to be true about the Yarra, when a rich chardonnay like this graces our glasses, the genuine giddiness is uncontainable. This is one to wrap your lips around. A highly pointed chardonnay, unashamedly full in flavour, with cashew nuts, nutmeg and a lemon citrus core. Like butter is to warm toast, this chardonnay is pure deliciousness.

This is very soft, rounded and alluring Peninsula chardy, with quite a subtle nose of melon, snow pea, pineapple and peppered, buttered white asparagus. While the nose seems to keep a card up its sleeve, the palate is contrastingly rich, with guava and red apple hitting the mix. It’s a bigger style of chardonnay with a somewhat chalky, roasted cashew savouriness rounding out the semi-dried tropical fruits on the palate. A really interesting wine. I can’t tell you much about the winemaking techniques, but I can assure you that it’ll be as much a talking piece of the table as it is a drinking piece.

We’re not sure what to be more excited about: our love for The Lane Vineyard or Adelaide Hills chardonnay. What we do know is that both seriously overdeliver time and time again. Famed vineyards on the estate in Hahndorf act as the workhorses for this wine, delivering long ripening periods with ripping fresh acidities. Honeydew melon, white blossom and white stone fruits fill the nose. The palate is a little bit creamy, with a nod to very delicate oak handling and a good squeeze of citrus. Give this one some care and it will hold out happily for the next 5 years. It is a wine that provides generously and asks for little in return.

Harvest. wines are produced by the adventurous and forward-thinking team from Unico Zelo. It’s a grower’s co-operative that aims to support growers and create crowd-pleasing wines. This chardonnay is from a vineyard in the northern Adelaide Hills that sits over alluvial clay and quartz. It’s full of minerality (no surprise there), honeydew, lemon, bright acidity and just a touch of creaminess. Hello long lunch!
