This is VERY good chardonnay from Eden Valley crafted by Thistledown, a producer who makes the greatest hits from across SA regions. So, Eden Valley you say? Yep - the altitude and cold nights that make great riesling, also make a long growing season for perfectly ripe chardy with great acid drive. It’s full of melon and peach, a hint of nuttiness and fresh acidity, giving drive and delightful length on the palate. The clean and crisp attack is balanced a touch of time in French oak for some lovely textural notes.

Hawkes Bay is known for bigger, richer chardy. Using American oak and malolactic fermentation also makes for bigger, richer chardy. So it is absolutely no surprise that if you put Hawkes Bay chardy into American oak to go through malolactic fermentation, you are going to end up with an immensely big and rich chardy. And that’s just what the winemaker at Coopers Creek did. We’re talking vanilla, cream, lemon, hazelnut and grapefruit with a bit of cedary oak in the background. If you love powerful, mouth-filling and smooth chardonnay, then this one’s for you.

Bonne Fortune means good luck - and good luck indeed, stumbling across an organic French chardonnay for less than a twenty! Chardonnay is a chameleon of a grape, capable of many styles from big and buttery to lean and mineral. This one is at the more elegant end of that spectrum with fresh green apple, white flowers and peach on the nose, followed by a bright and energetic palate. There’s more stone fruit on the palate, along with grapefruit and minerality. It’s a moreish sort of wine, and more so with a charcuterie board and a good conversation.

Maison Ventenac Carole Chardonnay 2020

Producer Maison Ventenac seem to be capturing our hearts one by one. Firstly, the wines are excellent. Secondly, they are beautifully packaged (you do taste with your eyes first). And thirdly - you’ll find little gems on on their website like these: “The sunny, gourmand Chardonnay of the South becomes tauter, livelier, and the taste buds want more.” “And if you ask us, ‘Why did you add Gros Manseng?’, we reply, ‘Why not?’.” Our taste buds are certainly wanting more of this delightfully refreshing chardy. It’s got just the right amount of mellow melon, puckering citrus and lively minerality. If you like your whites fresh and aromatic but not without oomph - this is a great wine to try.
