Single vineyard Yarra Valley goodness from Better Half, a āfo favourite producer. Green apple and vibrant, zesty lime on your Weetbix, with a dash of vanilla yoghurt on the top. Thatās what weāve got here. Lively, cool-climate derived acidity gives this the room to age for a good while, not that it needs it. But at least thereās no rush to drink it. And with a wine this good, and this complex, youāll want to take your time to savour every single drop.

Oh, hello delicious Chardonnay! Sea Glass is an overachieving, under-the-radar Mornington winery led by Andrew Santarossa. I wish I could write as well as Sam Kim who gave this Mornington chardonnay 95pts, as he was glowing. Iāll try my best and say that this wine has the best of the fruit salad, from ripe stone fruits to citrus tang. All of that fruit sits on a perfectly mid-weight palate and there is driving acidity that keeps the wine taught and fresh. A great example of Mornington charddy, from a single vineyard site.

Dang! This chardonnay has everything and then some. A vibrant peaches and cream nose let you know youāre drinking chardonnay and the acid speaks clearly of Tumbarumbaās cold nights. In the winery, Hungerford Hill combines lees stirring and French oak to give the wine weight and texture, but still keeping it super fruity in a grown-up chardonnay way. Three years old, this wine is drinking very well and will be for years.

This South of France chardy actually contains nearly 15% mauzac, a local grape variety which gives the wine a delightful charm all of its own. The sunshine down by Med ensures full ripening; the stone fruit and juicy citrus are immediately apparent in the glass. A lick of well-integrated oak gifts just enough texture for some satisfying mouthfeel, before it tapers off for a long and satisfyingly vibrant finish.

āI⦠I was standing. You were there. New and Old Worlds collided⦠and they made an awesome chardy.ā Ok INXS were right to reject these lyrics for their seminal hit. But we reckon the sentiment here was valid. Julien Schaal and his wife, Sophie, are modern day winemaking magicians. Shortly after completing vintage in their native France, they prepare to pack up and jet off to South Africa where they do it all over again to make their delicious vinos in the southern hemisphere. Head buyer, John, says, āLook for a more savoury style, as Julien is sandwiched between the old and new worlds.ā Right he is, too. Thereās all the New Worldās richness of fruit, balanced by Old World texture and poise. To give you a reference point, this could easily be a Yarra chardy from a classy vintage. Cashew and macadamia nuts meet subtle but intense fruit. Itās not too shouty, instead calmly emanating a delightful complexity. Peach granita, lemon butter, melon and Golden Delicious. The palate is silken, mouthfilling and gently textured. The finish, long and scrumptious.

Our mate at Ghost Rock Wines down in Tassie always provides us with excellent wines. Hereās his 2019 chardonnay and it warrants another badge on his sash. All the minerality, citrus and drive youād expect from quality Tasmanian chardonnay, but with a ludicrously bright freshness to boot. Because when light speed is too slow, you have to go right to ludicrous speed!
