Chardonnay 2018
Marlborough, NZ
94pts Bob Campbell | 94pts Sam Kim
In Marlborough, chardonnay is sometimes overshadowed by its louder sibling sauv blanc. Honestly, that’s a crying shame. Marlborough chardy, especially from a top producer such as this one, has depth, complexity, length and drive. This one is a bit creamy, with nectarine and lemon custard on the nose prefacing a palate of white peach, oatmeal and vanilla riding a wave of enticing minerality. Sometimes it’s the quiet ones you gotta watch out for.

If the wine is half as good as the stunning packaging, then this Ghost Rock chardonnay is going to be a killer! Tasmania is known for their quality wines and Ghost Rock are one of the best producers we've tried. This balanced and layered wine has fruit, minerality and a beautiful balance of richness and freshness. Very, very good wine.

We've come to adore Rosenthal over the last could of years for their reliably delicious reds and whites. This charddy is a lovely balance of stone fruit and zesty citrus wine a touch of vanilla from time in oak. There’s also a bit of lees stirring to add texture to an excellent wine. Drink up!

I love the Brothers at War - spunky young winemakers and sellers who work with great fruit from around the Barossa and Eden Valleys. They are a producer to watch, as each vintage is better than the last. This is certainly their best chardonnay yet with floral notes of honeysuckle and white jasmin, along with pears. The palate is easy-going, light to medium-bodied with an abundance of fleshy melons and white peach. Seasoned oak and lees stirring provide a lengthy finish

Bellvale are a small Gippsland producer with a very large following of their very smart wines. Their chardonnay is quite rich and has a leesy, nutty character that is balanced by vibrant acidity. It's the kind of wine to put in a big glass and watch unfold as a bit of time and air show a particularly detailed wine.

The Yarra Valley is such a powerhouse for chardonnay and this wine, made by the fantastic Rob Dolan, shows you why. It has complexity and yumminess at the same time, as fruit and acid dance together on the palate. Green apple, grapefruit and stone fruit are all there in this light-medium bodied fresh and delicious wine.
