An extroverted red which refuses to back down, this wine from Jim Brand is fragrant with dark forest fruits seducing the nose, while traces of mint and cedar oak add a twist of regional character. A torrent of ripe plum, dark berry and blackcurrant make their presence known on the palate - clearly dominating but steering clear of overwhelming the tastebuds. The finish is superb with great length and a dry finale. An outstanding example of how to balance power with restraint, and succeed - this magnificent cab shows others how its done.

Rosenthal keeps enjoying great vintages over in WA. The long, languorous ripening of rockstar fruit gives second-to-none complexity. This cabernet’s all about blueberries, violets and plums, with fine and frisky tannins giving even more life to an already lively palate. It finishes gloriously, with notes of toast and dark chocolate lingering for aeons between sips.

Highly rated, high quality Coonawarra cab sav from CW Wines, one of our favourite producers making wine out of Coonawarra. It doesn’t need to be much more complicated than that. It’s concentrated on the palate with blackcurrant, plum, cedar box and a bit of gaminess. There’s a silkiness to the mouthfeel and super fine tannins to finish. If you’re into Coonawarra cab, then you know what you like. And we know you’ll like this.

Ahhh, Hilltops. Feels like a setting from a Hobbit movie or the moon of Endor (Ewoks anyone?). Alas it’s simply a wine region in NSW, but one that’s churning out some really special cab sav. Because of its higher altitudes, the wines tend to be a bit more medium in body, leaning towards structure and nuance rather than power and punch. This example from Grove Estate gives you classic blackberry and plum, but the finish is chocolate and cedar wrapped in fine-grained tannin. Just magical.

It’s been a long time between drinks with the Richard Hamilton Hut Block cabernet, and it’s back years later as a newer vintage with a massive 96 points! The crisp, maritime climate of McLaren Vale provides the perfect terroir for the cabernet grape... as evidenced right here. Ripening during the day, the cool sea breeze helps to lock in the intense flavours. The result? A delicious and rich wine. Grippy, with well integrated oak, this cab is all juicy cassis fruit, plum and blackberries, cedar and waves of spice. Great length and amazing value.

St Johns Road Line & Length Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

'Line and Length' is more than a catchy name for this wine from St Johns Road. If it weren’t for the cabernet ‘grip’, the textbook tannin that squares things away so nicely, it would simply slide down the hatch. It’s just too easy breezy and delicious. The lifted red berry aroma is a gentle prelude to dark berries that roll in waves, washing over the palate with some cheeky vanilla sweetness lolling around too. Bold with just subtle oak on the finish, this is a ‘sit down’ kinda wine. No shaking the snake hips on the dance floor but rather dim the lights, recline and settle in.
