Mofo Fave

Highly rated, high quality Coonawarra cab sav from CW Wines, one of our favourite producers making wine out of Coonawarra. It doesn’t need to be much more complicated than that. It’s concentrated on the palate with blackcurrant, plum, cedar box and a bit of gaminess. There’s a silkiness to the mouthfeel and super fine tannins to finish. If you’re into Coonawarra cab, then you know what you like. And we know you’ll like this.

Five Star Halliday Rated Producer
Mofo Fave Producer

Coonawarra gets all the attention, but Wrattonbully perhaps deserves the same acclaim. It’s only twenty minutes down the road, generally provides better value and has a cooler name in my opinion (just sayin’, not that it matters for what’s in the bottle). This cabernet comes from Briar Ridge, who work wonders in the region, and it exhibits all the classic hallmarks of the variety held together by some healthy French oak treatment. On top of all that, it’s already got five years of age, placing it right in its drinking prime.

James Halliday
Five Red Star Halliday Rated Winery

This medium-bodied cabernet by Willoughby Park is sourced entirely from the Kalgan River Vineyard in Great Southern, a site that is renowned for punching well above its weight. It spends a fair bit of time in oak, but what it draws from this ageing period has already fully integrated into the wine. There’s vivid and complex fruit to balance this, leaning towards blackcurrant, backed up by typical varietal eucalpyt and a compelling herbaceous tone.

Five-year-old Coonawarra red from Hollick? Yes please! the Tannery Block is from the 1970s/80s planting of cabernet and merlot (cab dominant). The wine has all the depth you'd expect from older, established wines and a bit of aged. The cabernet tannins have mellowed a bit and the fruit is developing a savoury age. Great drinking for the next few years.

Looking for the perfect mid-week quaffing cabernet? The kind of bottle that you don’t mind splashing into the Bolognese sauce, sipping while you cook and then cracking another one for the meal? If so, then we think this cab sav from Rymill fits the bill perfectly. It’s Coonawarra cab from one of the region’s best - no doubt the wine that you’d pick up a couple of dozen of at their cellar door, but you’ve got it here now. Medium-bodied, full of cassis and supported by a bit of oak.
