What do you expect from a reserve Margaret River cabernet? Cassis and mint, cedar and bay leaf... check. Great cellar potential... check. You’d probably expect it to be quite delicious, too. Well, this single vineyard example from St Johns Brook won’t let you down there either as it’s silky smooth with a long long finish. Expectations have been met.

Warramunda Estate has provided us with a beautiful wine enclosed in an equally beautiful bottle. Under golden wax-dipped cork lies a Bordeaux-style blend dominated by cabernet sauvignon with a bit of cabernet franc and petit verdot to round it out. Such a complex wine, rich in body yet reserved in expression. There’s blackcurrant, tobacco, autumnal leaves, fine-grained tannins and a silky mouthfeel. This is drinking so well right now, but has years ahead of it to develop and evolve.

Not to be confused with Geoff Merrill’s ‘Pimpala Road’ range, these Pimpala Vineyard wines are careful barrel selections from his reserve range. This has spent no less than 20 months in French and American oak barrels, plus over three years in the cellar to let all its powerful fruit and decadent oak flavour all meld together. It’s roughly a 2:1 Coonawarra:McLaren Vale blend - Coonawarra class, with ramped up richness from the Vale’s contribution. It’s like liquid black chocolate cake, with the Vale’s dark chocolate and heady spice flavours oozing head-on into dark cherry, blackcurrant leaf and roasted coconut. It’s on the fuller side of medium-bodied, with classic cabernet scaffolding fleshed out and as smooth as can be.

Looking for perfumed elegance in the form of a super stylish cabernet from a cool climate? Look no further than Briar Ridge. Move over Yarra, Orange is here! This wine’s got it all. Layers of red and dark berries sit amongst mineral notes and a touch of cedar. It’s mid-weight and where you don’t get a wallop of alcohol, you get complexity and length. There are abundant tannins from French oak offering structure and a good backbone of acid which will help in the ageing process.

We are not joking when we say that Balgownie Estate is the OG of Victorian cabernet. They have been a leader for decades and are an icon in Central Victoria. It’s not every day that these true gems come about, but when they do - we get pumped! 2017 was a great vintage and this wine shows that perfectly ripe Cabernet fruit with a firm palate, integrated tannins and all the fruit generosity that you would want from the region. I’d call this wine plush, but not over the top, as it sit on the border of medium and full bodied. Oak plays a part, but doesn’t dominate the blackcurrant and mulberry notes. Get excited people, because if you snag a case of this cab - you’ll be as pumped as we are.

The Pike family have been producing authentic, handcrafted wines in South Australia since 1886. The Dogwalk is their expression of premium cool climate Australian Cabernet, showcasing the uniqueness of the Clare Valley region. Unlike their Coonawarra counterparts, this wine is meant to be drunk young with fragrant red and blackcurrant fruit and a gentle aroma of crushed violets. Best served with good family and friends.
