Why do we love this case?

We can’t get enough of the King of Grapes. From bright and elegantly textured to piledriver power and raucously rich, this Bordeaux native is equally capable of brilliance in a blend or all on its own. This pack offers you a selection of five Aussie cabs from right across the country, and a cheeky Argentinian thrown in for good measure. There’s something unique about each one and each offers its own journey of discovery. Bow down to the King (six different ways)!

Every case contains one of each of the following:

Red
Cabernet Blend
Clare Valley

Snake Trail Wine Co. Pussyfoot Cabernet Blend 2016
Allspice
Blueberry
Plum
Full-bodied
Firm
Bold

Clare Valley never ceases to amaze and this is a case in point. The evocatively named Snake Trail Wine Co. has made a classic Aussie red, defined as much by richness as it is drive. Only their very best grapes go into this blend, from a vineyard famously home to numerous snakes (hence the name). Apparently, nobody is quite sure how old these vines are, but with the level of concentration and complexity on offer here, we’re willing to bet they weren’t planted last year. Think rich, juicy plums, tangy blackcurrants and the savoury undertone of coffee grounds, almonds and bone broth. The cooler Clare makes its mark by imbuing it with greater acidity and aromatic lift, adding a refined edge to the finish. A generous 18-24 months of French oak wraps it all up into one deliciously age-worthy package.

Clare Valley cabernet is vastly underrated at all ends of the price spectrum. For this money, Kilikanoon have (yet again) delivered an absolute titanic effort. It’s bright and lively the moment it hits the palate, sizzling with fruit flavour and life. Then, as you settle in for the ride, come savoury tones of spice and herbs, followed by a long, luxurious finish. It’s still young, so it’s all about the bright fruit at the moment, but there’s so much potential for ageing that it’s almost scary when you consider the value on offer here. That said, it’s massively enjoyable right now. Give it a spell in the decanter if you’re afraid of getting stuck in straight away. But, you can probably tell from my enthusiasm that I was far from put off by this young wine, and not a word of anything but praise was uttered around the tasting bench by my fellow mofos.

Botham Merrill Willis is a successful partnership between premier winemaker Geoff Merrill and cricketing legends Sir Ian Botham and Bob Willis. Because who wouldn’t want a knight on their side when they go into battle with the rest of the Vale? Well, let the cricketing puns be unleashed! Without a hint of spin, this six year old cabernet has a decent innings left in it. A full century is doubtful but a good start is ensured thanks to Geoff’s deft touch. All the classic dark berry and blackcurrant that exude cabernet at large, plus distinctive espresso and black olive notes that scream McLaren Vale. Rounded out with Mint Slice chocolate gives a very more-ish wine for any and every time cheese is on the table. I could spin things further but I wouldn’t want to make a silly point. So I guess that’s stumps.

Some of my favourite things are in the Yarra Valley. As a childhood steam-engine fanatic, I relived those boyish dreams on Puffing Billy, and even got a lovely photo with the driver afterwards (coup of the century, that one). If you like chocolate (and who doesn’t?) then the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice-Creamery is nigh-on unmissable. On cold days they do a mean hot chocolate for starters, but it’s a great spot to stock up on choccy delights to keep in the pantry – ready at a moment’s notice to cure those Tuesday blues. Oh, I almost forgot Healesvillle sanctuary. This was one of my first visits as a fresh-off-the-boat Brit three years ago. To see all those quasi-mythological animals in the flesh was damn great fun, and I’ve been back twice with various visitors since. It’s easy to fill a week with everything that’s going on over there. Then, of course, when you get home, you’ll want to crack open a bottle of this. It’s probably top of my list for Yarra experiences, it’s that good, and you can enjoy it from your own sofa. Winning.

They build ‘em tough over in Mendoza. Don’t get me wrong - this is not ‘rustic’ wine. This is plush and powerful, sleek and modern, and carries itself with considerable poise. I mean ‘tough’ as in ‘happy to take on the world without so much as a grimace’. When you make cab sav, you’re always going to be compared with Bordeaux. But the pretenders to the crown coming out of Mendoza don’t even bat an eyelid, such is the composure and depth on offer. This is full of all those dark berries, violets, and oak notes that you’d want, with considerable cellar potential in front of it. If you like an Aussie cabernet, it’s the logical next place to look. There’s all the familiar new world swagger, with just enough of an accent to be intriguing. It’s the perfect way to get people chatting, without spending much money.

On the nose we’re greeted with blackcurrants, blackberries, charry oak, and a smidge of tar, all underlined and circled by a bit of lively Sharpie action. The palate’s rounded and rippling with rambunctious renditions of ripe red and black fruits, their individual identities rendered moot, magically meshing into one mouthwatering mosaic when matched to roasted red meats and generous gulpings of gutsy gravy. Boom.
