James Halliday
5 Star Halliday rated producer

Ladies and gentlemen of the ‘Fo! It is with great pleasure, and pleased palates, that we offer you today the latest (and greatest) vinous endeavour out of South Australia. One that has both our greatest admiration and our mouths salivating. Having already wow’d Sir James Halliday and received an impressive 95 points, this parcel of vino magic is ready to conquer the ‘Fo. This is a single vineyard stunner that Halliday says “broods over a core of molten dark fruits – plum, cherry, and cassis – all pinned to varietal herb and mint”. This cabernet is a performance of flavours, and it’s not to be missed. Roll up, mofos.

The gang at Chalkers Crossing are known around town for crafting pretty damn fine wines. In the decade that our resident wine buyer Karel has been in the industry, he’s never once seen a Chalkers vino go for less than the asking price. Which makes this cabernet sauvignon a trade rarity; a bloody unicorn in the wine world. If you’re after a 95 point cab for next to nothing, then your window of opportunity is open, mofos. Featuring those classic cool climate aromas of cassis, cedar and mint, alongside a palate that’s full of dark wild berries and silky tannins, this is a god-send. Seize the cabernet!

This cab is so in demand that it only made it to mixed packs, so here's one of your few chances to try this vintage. Another great year in the Coonawarra, here's a bright and memorable drop which will continue to deliver for the next 5 years. Crafted by a legendary Coonawarra family whose Midas touch has graced many wines past and present, this is medium bodied, silky smooth and jampacked with notes of fragrant red berry, wild spice and a touch of cedar, complete with rippling tannins.

James Halliday

A really drinkable blend from a boutique winery here, hailing from the Upper Goulburn wine region in NSW. It’s ready to drink now at the ripe old age of five or will keep for another few years yet. Medium-bodied with notes of blackcurrant, tobacco and leather, it has 92 big ones from Halliday and is just a really pleasant drinking experience, best kept on your wine rack for a rough Thursday at work.

You could get really intricate and talk about stewed blackberry mint, or you could just say it has really nice dark fruits. There are blackberries, blueberries and red fruits as well, and beautiful structural tannin, which is what you want. It’s big, bold but smooth and I’m going to say it...I almost prefer McLaren Vale cab sauv because I think it is a little more red fruit forward as opposed to that dark, dense Coonawarra style.

The ‘08 and ‘10 vintages of this cab sauv sold out ridiculously quickly and there are short odds on the ‘11, a museum release, following suit. Rich, dense and concentrated, it has those classic blackcurrant and cassis notes you expect from a Margs cabernet and has spent some time in French oak. Take it back to your parents’ place next Sunday and have it with mum’s lamb roast or, if your family is anything like mine, drink it while looking at the charred remains of what was once a delicious roast, and say ‘at least we have good wine.’
