Whether you are into the savoury elegance of pinot noir or the berry spice of gamay, this pack is sure to please, showing off some of the best of both Burgundy and Beaujolais.

Domaine Charton is a family-run Burgundy producer who has been making wine in Mercurey (Côte Chalonnaise) for generations. They are a unique producer with a red wine focus in a predominantly white wine area. Vineyards range from Bourgogne level to Premier Cru and all wines are made with particular attention to detail, starting in the vineyards, which they manage meticulously. This is their Bourgone-level from old vines, with an average age of 50 years. All of the hard work is done in the vineyard and the wine sees the moderate influence of 30% new barrels over a year of ageing. This is a firm-fruited style of Burgundy with generous red berries, ripe plums and a touch of spice. The subtle oak influence plays second fiddle to all of the luscious fruit, acidity that gives the wine good length and a bit of tannin that suggests this wine will sing with food.

We're going to leave this one to the experts at Wine Advocate - this is what they had to say: "Bursting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, cherries, blood orange, rose petals and spices, Passot's 2018 Chiroubles Grille-Midi is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with an ample core of fruit, powdery structuring tannins and succulent acids. Matured in demi-muids, this deceptively charming wine possesses the sneaky structure to reward bottle age."

This is Domaine Charton's Bourgogne-level pinot noir, made from a collection of sites and vinified with around 30% new oak and aged for just under a year. According to wine critic Robert Parker, they make “a range of generous, gourmand red Mercurey bottlings that display melting tannins and an abundance of juicy fruit.” This wine is a great place to start in exploring their range and also a good beginners step into red Burgundy.

Single Vineyard

What you are looking at here is CRAZ-Y good, top shelf single vineyard Beaujolais, from Domaine de la Grosse Pierre. Beaujolais is famous for its light, bright, fruity wines made from gamay, and this wine, though as easy to drink as the usual Bojo, takes the category to new heights and depths. The height we are talking about is from 70 year old gamay vines, planted at 460 metres above sea level, giving the grapes a long growing season and lots of complexity. The depths are the layers of detail in the wonderful wine. It is a wine that is both bold with rich fruit and deep with nuance of spice, flowers and freshness.

Mofo Fave

Few wines are as unabashedly, beautifully, boisterously fun as the Beaujolais. This is absolutely no exception. But don’t be fooled by the ‘Villages’ designation. While wines from this tier of the region can be fantastic, this one tends toward exceptional. The vineyards are hilly, and of higher altitude than even the Brouilly cru. That height gives cooler nights, greater complexity, driving acidity and plenty of daytime sunshine to boot. Look for classic gamay notes: jubilant berries, potting soil, slatey minerality and lighter, quaffable body. This is beyond perfect with roast turkey, though chicken will do just fine, too. Otherwise, it is THE red picnic wine - think terrine, cold cuts, cheeses and sunshine.
