Why do we love this case?

Psst, you there! Yeah you! Stop looking around, you’re acting suspicious. You’re here for the Black Market wines, aren’t you? Yeah, that’s this box here. Don’t worry they’re all 100% legit, we’re just doing our winemaker mates a favour by not shouting their names from the rooftops. We don’t want to hurt their relations with other retailers, just cause they gave us the best prices.

This box is a wicked mix of  7 reds and  5 whites. Keep it on the down-low though, will ya? Let’s not spoil this sweet deal we got going on.

BLACK MARKET Chardonnay 2016

Mornington Peninsula, VIC

90pts Australian Wine Review |5 red star Halliday rated winery

There’s a chewy richness to this that’s as comforting as snuggling up with a throw on a cold winter’s night. The first thing that came to mind on tasting was lemony hummus. There’s a racy acidity that scintillates the palate and makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Far from feeling up a creek without a paddle, though, a soft leesy and oaky richness gives a comforting appeal to balance it all out. It’s not your classic ‘sunny’ Aussie chardy that’s all peaches and cream; a saline edge and thinly veiled complexity makes it all the more exciting. It may not let you sleepwalk through a glass like other wines may do, but it’ll reward your attention with fabulous depths to discover.

BLACK MARKET Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Margaret River, WA

94pts Wine Showcase | 93pts Sam Kim | Gold medal Wine Showcase | 5 red star Halliday rated winery

A perennial classic from one of our favourite Margaret River makers, and it’s the grape variety Margaret River is most known for. So it’s cab sav, Margaret River, great vintage, great wine. In the words of Eddie the Wine Guy: “There are lovely aromas of blackcurrant, a little bit of spice and tobacco. I’d probably go for a lamb roast, or maybe even a beef roast, because it has lovely drying tannin. It’s going to go really nicely with a bit of hearty protein that’s been shoved in the oven for a couple of hours. Medium-bodied, drinking beautifully now, but it will age five, maybe ten years if you really want it to.”

BLACK MARKET Shiraz 2018

Glenrowan, VIC

This limited release delight comes from a single vineyard in Glenrowan, at the heart of Ned Kelly country. The area’s calmed down a bit over the past century and the grapes are finding all the peace and quiet they need for long, slow maturation to make delicious vino. This has all the fruit richness you’d expect - black plums, juicy red cherries and buckets of spices thrown into the mix. A mix of French and American oak treatment gives it greater depth and tannin presence, and sets it up well for short term ageing over the next three to five years or so.

BLACK MARKET Shiraz 2017

McLaren Vale, SA

96pts Wine Showcase | 93pts Sam Kim | Five red star rated Halliday Winery | Halliday Dark Horse Winery Award

Consistency is everything, and this maker’s consistently rocking out. We got the 2016 version of this wine before it was rated, and it did us proud with 94s and 95s. This vintage has met all expectations, having picked up an even higher 96pts  from the Wine Showcase. Even more reason to get around. It’s jam-packed with everything we love about the Vale… dark fruits, chocolate, spice, herbal hints and fine tannins. And because you guys have got great taste, we know you’re going to love it just as much as us.

BLACK MARKET Sauvignon Blanc

Marlborough, NZ

91pts Sam Kim | Sustainable Farming

You wouldn’t even need to see the bottle to be able to pick what this is. So classic, so unmistakable is the style that even less experienced mofos will blurt ‘Marlborough sauvignon blanc’ at first sniff. Passionfruit - so much passionfruit - coupled with aromatic lemongrass and bright, tangy squeezed lime on the finish. That acidity slices through whatever you pair it with, keeping things bright and breezy as a summer’s day… even in the coldest depths of winter.

YOU’D PAY $28 full price.

BLACK MARKET Picpoul de Pinet 2017

Picpoul de Pinet AOC, France

98pts Marcel Orford-Williams | 97pts Andrew Jefford | 95pts Decanter | 90pts Justin Howard-Sneyd MW

This isn’t just some token Picpoul de Pinet that we’ve sourced for the sake of making this pack look a bit fancy. This is a 98 point Picpoul we’ve sourced because it’s bloody fantastic. From the sunny Mediterranean coast of France, its natural dinner table stablemate is seafood - and lots of it. The palate speaks of bright, pithy citrus, with liberal saline and mineral notes to follow, reminding you of the rocky coastline that birthed it. This is a wine that’s probably out of your usual comfort zone. But, as soon as you try it, you’ll find your comfort zone very accommodating.

YOU’D PAY $25 full price.

BLACK MARKET Shiraz Grenache 2016

McLaren Vale, SA

93pts James Halliday | 93pts Sam Kim | 5 stars Sam Kim

Consistency is key to the game for these guys. Their main aim is deliciousness year after year, and it must be said they’ve knocked it out of the park once again. They’re masters of the grenache grape so this half of the blend is well taken care of. Add in their sleek, sexy Vale shiraz and you’ve got a recipe for excitement. Think peppery, juicy, dribble-inducing plums, dusted with a bit of cocoa and rubbed with an orange rind for a negroni-like twist.

BLACK MARKET Cabernet Blend 2013

Coonawarra, SA

90pts Halliday Wine Companion

This is no-nonsense dependable cabernet merlot from one of Coonawarra’s stalwart wineries. They’ve been doing great things with Bordeaux blends for years now and are showing no signs of letting up. The merlot addition, making it classic claret in style, just smooths out the mid palate and makes for all the more luxurious drinking. There’s all that classic blackberry and mulberry action, with a breath of minty magic you’d expect from the region. It’s already had the time to settle into its stride, so no issues with cracking this open come Sunday lunch! But these things are built to last and there’s much to be gained from cellaring a while longer, too.

YOU’D PAY $25 full price.

BLACK MARKET Pinot Gris 2017

Marlborough, NZ

91pts Sam Kim | Gold medal Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition 2018

This charming gris is like a wander through a luscious green Kiwi valley. The nose is like a spring meadow - flowers everywhere, filling the air with sweet perfume. The palate’s an orchard, juicy ripe pears and apricots, bursting with flavour and pithy texture. The air is clean and cool; everything’s bathed in golden light.

YOU’D PAY $25 full price.

BLACK MARKET Riesling 2018

Coonawarra, SA

95pts Limestone Coast Wine Show | Gold Medal Limestone Coast Wine Show | 5 red star Halliday rated winery

This is fine and floral, with surely a little pinot gris in the mix - if not, it’s doing a good impression: pear and golden apple match its lemon-lime, florals, yellow peach and pineapple. The palate is tauter than the fruity nose would have you believe, which bodes well for the years to come with the layers already showing on the nose. Shows very little development, and finishes fine and minerally. Right now I’d want to throw a meaty white-fleshed fish at it, with all the fresh leafy herbs and greens. But maybe that’s because I just had gelato and afternoon chocolate and I’m feeling the guilt.

YOU’D PAY $25 full price.

BLACK MARKET Pinot Noir 2018

Yarra Valley, VIC

This pinot inspires a love/hate relationship in me. I love the bright juicy fruit with the gentle earthiness and soft, easy tannin. I hate that a dozen sounds like enough, and then by week three you’re down to your last bottle. Be warned, mofo. You will definitely notice your friends swinging by more often once they’ve quaffed a glass or two of this with you. It’s just deliciously easy drinking, and made by a living Yarra legend. Bright cherries and strawberries, with just a sparkle of tannin for shape. It’s not Grand Cru Burgundy, it’s way more yummy.

YOU’D PAY $24 full price.

BLACK MARKET Grenache Blend 2017

Languedoc-Rousillon, France

Gold medal concours des grands vins du Languedoc-Roussillon 2018 | Gold medal concours national des vins IGP 2018 | Gold medal concours Gilbert et Gaillard 2018 | Gold medal sélection 70 millions de dégustateurs 2018

These guys are some of the absolute rockstars of the Languedoc in Southern France. Once a region for quick and easy vino, it’s been led through a renaissance in recent years by wineries like this that’re revolutionising the quality and complexity of the wines on offer. This is GSM, classic to this part of France, but not as an Aussie would know it. It’s all about the oh-so-fragrant herbs and spices in this. Think lavender, thyme and oregano aromatics, over deep and darkly ripe berries such as blackcurrant, plum and a streak of licorice.

YOU’D PAY $22 full price.

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article, absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.
