Why do we love this case?

Who’s ready for another mad mix of the best value vino we could lay our hands on? What unites this mighty dozen of mystery wines is the secrecy of the deal, the scale of the value, and the deliciousness of the vino. Perfect for lovers of good surprises.

Every case contains one of each of the following:

BLACK MARKET Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Margaret River, Western Australia

This vino is only made in very good years, hand picked and hand selected from the best Estate fruit, using premium French oak, which are then culled to the brightest and finest. We look forward to the years when it’s made, because it makes for very good years for us too.

At the Tasting Bench

In Zahn’s words, this was like a “beautiful blueberry tisane”, with violets, milk chocolate and some lovely leafy blackcurrant action. It’s fruit forward but backed by gravelly tannins. Classic medium bodied Margaret River cab, long and grippy but bright and juicy.

I don’t know about you, but I want this, and a beautiful blueberry tisane. Hopefully Zahn’s making me one right now.

BLACK MARKET Shiraz Cabernets 2017

McLaren Vale, South Australia

95pts Sam Kim | 5 red star Halliday rated winery | Halliday dark horse winery award

A firm favourite of the ’fo - in fact, that’s an understatement. ‘Staple’ is more accurate, considering that the number of bottles that’ve landed in hot little mofo hands almost stretches into six figures. And that’s only over three vintages.

But the consistent goodness here is so reliable, and the quality so high for the price that its popularity isn’t so mind-boggling as at first glance. From a maker who can do no wrong, this shiraz-cabernet has all the things we love in a classic McLaren Vale red. Dark fruits, chocolate, spice and herbal hints with wonderful length and drive, this is an absolute cracker of a blend. We already know you love it just as much as us.

YOU’D PAY $40 full price.

BLACK MARKET Shiraz 2017

Heathcote, Victoria

2017 was a stellar vintage pretty much all over Victoria, and Heathcote was no different. Of all grapes in Heathcote, says Halliday, shiraz was the standout. Reason to get excited then!

If you’re a fan of the region (that makes two of us), then you’ll love this. Rich, ripe red and black fruits make for plush mouthfeel. Then, that characteristic spiciness crackles across the back palate. It’s all held together by supportive but unobtrusive French and American oak. Heathcote shiraz is a fun wine anyway, and this one’s a ripsnorter. Fire in your belly, and spice in your glass. You’d like four cases? Thought you’d never ask.

YOU’D PAY $35 full price.

BLACK MARKET Chardonnay 2017

Great Southern, Western Australia

93pts James Halliday | 5 star Halliday rated winery

Glorious fruitiness abounds in this gorgeous Great Southern chardy. Nectarines, peaches and lovely waxy citrus brightness are tied together with judicious use of vanillin oak and grapefruit acidity.

Fruit, oak, and texture all come together in harmony. It goes to show the supreme power of balance - and proves you don’t need grapes handpicked by a mute monk in France to make something damn yummy.

Food for thought, wine for drinking.

Barossa, South Australia

5 red star Halliday rated winery

We’ve mentioned how much we love this wine many times before. Pretty much every vintage we’ve had, in fact. So for this 2018, I thought I’d look at what makes it so good.

It’s a fantastically well thought-out wine. Each of the individual varieties, from every different vineyard, was separately matured in small vats to track their progress, and then matured in French oak for depth and complexity. A small amount was kept in stainless steel to preserve fruit purity, too. The resultant blend utilises grenache from the Barossa and Eden Valleys (the former, opulent, the latter more floral), mataro from the Barossa, and a selection of shirazes from across all of Maverick’s holdings. Talk about painstaking process. The 2018 vintage saw some drought, so yields were massively reduced and fantastic quality resulted.

It’s bold, plush and roaring good fun. Where else can you get all that for this price?

YOU’D PAY $29 full price.

BLACK MARKET Shiraz Grenache 2016

McLaren Vale, South Australia

93pts James Halliday | 93pts Sam Kim | 5 stars Sam Kim

“They’re very good winemakers, these guys. They produce a very consistent product at a very consistent price. They’re grenache specialists, and add their silky Vale shiraz to the mix and you have yourself a winner.” So says John to the gaggle of geeks at the Tasting Bench.

This is spicy, peppery, and juice-running-down-your-chin plums. A full spectrum of blue, black and red fruits, with a lovely doughiness to it, barbera-like almost but much, much richer.

YOU’D PAY $25 full price.

BLACK MARKET Shiraz 2015

Bendigo, Victoria

94pts James Halliday | Special value award James Halliday

This is a cracking Shiraz from up Bendigo way. Co-fermented with viognier, like they do in certain parts of the Northern Rhône (and at Clonakilla), it gives this wine massive aromatic lift and heady complexity. Bendigo is relatively warm, so this is full of spicy dark fruits, balanced by plush plums and powerful cocoa-rich oak. There are violets too, and a real rustic earthiness will come through with time. If you’re ready for a change from soft, shapeless shirazes from hot climes, this is the perfect sidestep. Fine but present acid and tannin to give shape and a rock-steady backbone. Enjoy now or over the next five to ten years.

YOU’D PAY $25 full price.

BLACK MARKET Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Marlborough, New Zealand

93pts Sam Kim | 90pts Bob Campbell MW | 16.5 Raymond Chan

On the brighter, zestier end of the spectrum, this Marlborough sav is delectably expressed. Where other savvies thrive on grandma-perfume pungency, this one is all about poise and nuance. There’s passionfruit, of course, with typical ripe juiciness. But this one thrives on its herbaceousness and exotic lemongrass, nettle, and lime. ‘Tangy’ is the correct word here - Thai food-ready.

YOU’D PAY $25 full price.

BLACK MARKET Malbec 2017

Mendoza, Argentina

From the Maipu region of Mendoza province, this producer has made a cracking young Malbec. Perky plum and other purple fruits right here. A freshly proven sourdough quality to it that’s quite alluring, with a blueberry juice moat around it. The palate is super smooth and fruit-driven, with stewed plum, strawberry and black pepper following through with more allure. Long, sumptuous, just a little bit of tannin to give the wine weight and presence. ‘Perky’ is the perfect word for this bright little medium-bodied red.

YOU’D PAY $24 full price.

BLACK MARKET Pinot Noir 2018

Yarra Valley, Victoria

This pinot inspires a love/hate relationship in me. I love the bright juicy fruit with the gentle earthiness and soft, easy tannin. I hate that you think a dozen will be enough, and then by week three you’re down to your last bottle. Be warned, mofo. You will definitely notice your friends swinging by more often once they’ve quaffed a glass or two of this with you. It’s just deliciously easy drinking, and made by a living Yarra legend. Bright cherries and strawberries, with just a sparkle of tannin for shape. It’s not Grand Cru Burgundy, it’s way more yummy.

YOU’D PAY $24 full price.

BLACK MARKET Riesling 2018

Clare Valley, South Australia

Some people think riesling’s a bit daggy and something only your grandma would drink, but they’re wrong. Legends drink riesling.

You’ll find some beautiful citrus here – lots of lovely lime zest, lemon flesh, grapefruit pith. Some melon rind and green apple too. Lots of beautiful layers and it smells like springtime.

Riesling naturally hangs on to its acid while the sugar is still developing in the fruit so it’s always going to have this lovely, refreshing quality to it. That’s what makes it so perfect for food. Indian, Thai, Vietnamese – chill it right down and it’s going to be really refreshing and give lift to all those aromatic flavours. This is a kickarse riesling.

BLACK MARKET Pinot Gris 2017

Limestone Coast, South Australia

This wine is like an orchard in a glass. Juicy green apples here, Nashi pear over there, wafts of lemon-scented flowers and honeyed notes from the busy bees. This single block of gris from a family-owned vineyard does transport you to the idyll that is what we all imagine vignerons are surrounded by, day in, day out. A good reason to keep a bottle handy, for when you need to remind yourself how to better live the dream.

YOU’D PAY $18 full price.

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article, absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.
