Magnus means 'great' in Latin and they were not wrong in naming this powerful and robust wine. Based in Padthaway, which is famous for it's powerful shiraz, Henry's drive have crafted a wonderful wine that is singing at five years old. There's a splash of McLaren Vale juice in this one too, bringing jubey red fruit and great colour. The wine is full of plums, dark cherries and spice from nearly two years in new French oak.

Sorby Adams have crafted this wine with all the firepower to create a classic Barossa big red. It's mainly cabernet, with about a third shiraz and a big hit of French oak (30% new for 30 months). It’s powerful, weighty, rich and complex. The nose is all blackcurrant, plum, chocolate and vanilla. This continues on the palate, propped up by cedary notes from the aforementioned extended maturation in barrel.

This is your archetypal rich and full-bodied Vale shiraz. III Associates know their target market, and their target market know them. So it’s packed with ripe purple fruit, sticks of vanilla and generous licks of coffee and caramel. Named for the Black Bay of Biscay Clay, the vines are grown in, which leads to small grapes of wonderful density. So no wonder the colour, flavour and all the things are dialled up in this wine. The wine spends a year in a combinations of French and American oak barrels - largely new - so there is tannin, notes of cedar and even more power. Lovers of no-holds-barred flavour unite!

Rosenvale's wonderful grenache is from a vineyard in Vine Vale, one of the best parts of Barossa. It is a wine that patience has rewarded, from old vines that were planted in the 1930s, bring intensity and complexity. It is a classic wine, brimming with fruit and after a year and a half in oak (all French), fruit and tannin are well integrated. That said, it’s still quite young so you’ll see lively fruit - plums, berries, blueberries - along with a real spiciness. I’m talking about sweet and punchy spices like liquorice and fennel. This vibrancy will mellow over the next few years and I’ve no doubt that it will just become more and more interesting.

This is the second vintage we’ve had of this wine from the Auld family. They've been at it in South Australia since the mid-1800’s. For this shiraz, they have sourced grapes from several growers around the Barossa, resulting in a balanced and stylish wine indicative of the region. It’s rich, velvety, deep in colour and lengthy on the palate. Gentle working in the winery has kept the tannins soft and really brought forward an expression of blackberries, chocolate and coffee. This is big, bold and smooth Barossa shiraz to kick back with on a chilly night.

If we had to describe this wine in three words: Bold, confident and oh so delicious. The bouquet is inviting with red cherries and raspberries and that hint of spice that McLaren Vale is so well-know for. The palate displays excellent fruit intensity with wonderfully silky tannins. Whether you decide to save this for a few years or enjoy it tonight with a scrumptious steak, either choice is good.
