Shiraz 2017
Barossa, SA
Top Wineries 2022 – The Real Review | Old-vine | Single vineyard
This Barossa shiraz speaks of the powerful Barossa terroir and the master crafters who made it. It’s powerful and opulent, but maintains a certain grace that keeps everything in balance. There’s no surprises here with the flavour profile, an expression of blackberry, plum, chocolate, spices and cedar from the use of 30% new French oak. After five years in bottle, it’s drinking beautifully now, but has another decade of prime left in it for those patient types.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
Coonawarra, SA
96 Points, Wine Orbit | 4.3 Vivino (all vintages)
We’ve now seen two vintages of this ripper deal fly out the door. For those in the know, this wine never disappoints upon pulling the cork. This cellar release may have eight years of development behind it, but give it a taste and you’ll see that it is only starting to touch its prime drinking window. The once boisterous tannins have now mellowed on the silky palate, and fruit is joined by herbaceous and somewhat meaty notes. There’s still classic cabernet cassis and blackberry, which is accompanied by rosemary, thyme and a long and savoury finish.

Shiraz 2020
Clare Valley, SA
Five Red Star Halliday Rated Producer
This inimitable Clare Valley shiraz is a firm ‘fo fave, and consistently one of the fastest selling wines we bring in. Not surprising, really. Rambunctious cherries and burstingly-juicy berries are just contained by a toasty coating of fabulous French oak. No rush to drink this beauty, it’ll keep the rest of your cellar very good company for a decade, easy.

Shiraz 2018
McLaren Vale, SA
96 Points - Winestate | 95 Points - Wine Orbit | 94 Points - Wine Pilot | Five Star Halliday Rated Winery
McLaren Vale shiraz, yes, but lithe and vibrant. A more medium-bodied feel leaves room for the lively fruit flavours to sing, unshackled from big, beefy, old-school styles. Classic brambly goodness skates on a fresh sheet of acidity, with just enough grippy tannin to keep it grounded. Miraculously food-friendly, there’s all the ingredients here for an infamous dinner party red. The kind you and your mates are liable to enjoy a wee bit too much of an evening.

Shiraz Cabernet 2017
Langhorne Creek, SA
This producer’s contributions to the wine industry have pre-dated many. In fact, they’ve been making the wines for many big name South Australian wineries for decades. Walk into their cellar door right on the border of McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills, and you’ll never want to leave. I was captured with their cellar reserve wines, the way that the plush fruit balanced so well with the savoury edges. There is no occasion that this wine doesn’t fit.

Shiraz 2020
Barossa, SA
Like a good book, wine is not all about what’s on the cover. But we have to say, when you’re getting great vino in some super sleek packaging, it’s a big bonus. This is the Barossa classic with a modern edge. Fruit-driven and rich, it hits every corner of your palate with pleasing intensity. The oak-imparted tannins make for a ripper time with some charred meat or veg, perfect for that easy weeknight in.
