Why do we love this case?

This box of the best is a roundup of some of our mofos’ favourites. No, there were no secret ballots or shady political machinations behind this lineup. Mofos vote with their mouths. And you’ve clearly got incredible taste – there’s more brilliance here than in a box of glitter! There’s as much bling as well, with each wine having big, big points.

Every case contains ONE of each of the following:

Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Adelaide Hills, SA

96pts Winestate Magazine | 95pts Royal Adelaide Wine Show | Gold Medal Adelaide Wine Show | 5 Star Halliday Rated Producer

This sauvignon blanc has so much bling, it looks like it’s robbed a jewellery store! This little gem from the Adelaide Hills is simply a wonderful sauv, abounding with character. Floral notes support vibrant fruits on the nose and the palate has the tropical trilogy of passionfruit, pineapple AND guava! It’s bright and bouncy with great texture and even a few nutty nuances. Get amongst it now people, cos it’s here for a good time, not a long time.

This is the second vintage we’ve had of this wine from the Auld family. They've been at it in South Australia since the mid-1800’s, so we think they know their way around big reds. For this shiraz, they have sourced grapes from several growers around the Barossa, resulting in a balanced and stylish wine indicative of the region. It’s rich, velvety, deep in colour and lengthy on the palate. Gentle working in the winery has kept the tannins soft and really brought forward an expression of blackberries, chocolate and coffee. This is big, bold and smooth Barossa shiraz to kick back with on a chilly night.

This French red has a deep dark colour and dense cassis, forest floor and shaved graphite on the nose. The palate starts very elegantly and then boom - fruit and power. Dark berries and potpurri with super-fine and abundant tannin. There’s a hint of beef stock on the back palate with all that chalky tannin and black tea on the finish - lots going on. This is a long and powerful wine, with so many flavours and nuances to discover.

We're going to let wine critic Sam Kim do the work here: "A delectably expressed shiraz; the perfumed bouquet shows dark plum, sweet cherry, subtle spice and floral aromas with hints of cocoa and cedar. It's wonderfully weighted and rounded on the palate, delivering fabulous fruit purity together with silky texture and rounded tannins. Flavoursome and instantly appealing. At its best: now to 2034."

We don't often see gris from Eden Valley - but this wine by CW has us thinking we should be seeking it out! The wine is perfumed, lifted and wonderfully fruity. A cool, citric acidity drives the experience with style and grace. The finish is long and lingering.

Silkwood's vineyard is patrolled by a guinea fowl, keeping insects under control and reducing the need for chemicals. I can just imagine them, their sense of duty juxtaposed by their skittish nature. They’d catch a glimpse of you or hear a rustle, and out came a squirt, a ‘cack-cack-cack!’ warning to the rest of the flock, and they were off in scattered directions like racehorses on cocaine. Hilarious little creatures. Meanwhile, this wine’s far from wild. It’s calm and collected, a lovely expression from a lovely vineyard. Judicious French oak spice supports some juicy citrus and stonefruit flavours, green apple and melon playing second fiddle too.

Cap Royal Bordeaux Supérieur is a ‘sum of its parts’ sort of wine. Jean-René Matignon, winemaker at the renowned Chateau Pichon Baron, is in charge of the wine each vintage and uses his extensive connections in Bordeaux to source grapes from vineyards he sees fit for the year’s blend. This allows him to select the best fruit to achieve his vinous goal without being limited to one plot of land. The 2018 vintage is 75% merlot and 25% cabernet sauvignon. Intensely coloured with a nose of blackberry, blueberry and spice, the wine expresses more dark fruits, vanilla and toasted oak on the palate. It’s powerful and rich, yet refreshing.

Brand & Sons is now in their 4th generation of vignerons, producing great wines, from one of the greatest regions in South Australia - sounds good to me. When the nights start to cool, and the sun goes down a little sooner than what what is has been, this wine is sure to warm up your frosty toes. A rich and ripe shiraz, with plum fruit, dark black cherries, gentle tannins and toasty oak and vanilla. No wonder this wine was awarded gold medal after gold medal. Get this in your glass and you’ll feel like you won first prize.

Cape Agulhas. Ever heard of it? Pop it into google maps and take a look at exactly where this drop hales from. You can’t get much more south of Africa than that. It’s where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet and you could certainly classify it as a maritime climate, cool enough to produce the elegant, lifted, lighter and peppery styles of shiraz. The Vinomofo buying team has been working hard to answer the calls of our members to get some more South African wine over here and we’re rapt the day has finally arrived. The First Sighting shiraz is a safe place to start your South African wine journey and there’s plenty more where that came from when you’re ready to venture out and discover all they have to offer.

Pinot blanc - not the most famous grape in the world, but bloody delicious and worth exploring. This is Gapsted's version of the grape from King Valley. Think of it as somewhere between young Hunter semillon and Mornington pinot gris. It’s fresh and zippy, but not neutral or dull either.
