This box of the best is a roundup of some of our mofos’ favourites. No, there were no secret ballots or shady political machinations behind this lineup. Mofos vote with their mouths. And you’ve clearly got incredible taste – there’s more brilliance here than in a box of glitter! There’s as much bling as well, with each wine having big, big points.
Every case contains ONE of each of the following:
Shiraz 2015

This shiraz is an absolute POWERHOUSE! A powerhouse of bold shiraz flavour and a wine that our mofos just can’t get enough of, from a producer who has become a solid favourite in the last year or so. The wine is deep and rich on the nose, with plum and a touch of eucalypt. We suggest decanting to get most of these complex aromas. On the palate, it’s full-bodied with drive and all the berries and plums you could want. The wine has seen a bit of new oak, both French and American and shows vanilla and spice. Now five-years-old, the fruit and oak are well integrated and the tannins are fine and abundant.

2+2=4. Barossa shiraz + talented producer = amazing wine. It really is a simple equation. Maverick Wines knows exactly what they are doing with their fruit and the end result is always a smashing wine. This shiraz has a few years of age on it, which has served to soften it a touch whilst still maintaining that oomph that makes the Barossa style so distinct and popular. The fruit is concentrated in the form of blackcurrant and plum, and there is a touch of earthiness underneath it all. On the finish, it’s a display of fine tannins and length, rounding out an easy-drinking wine that’ll please anyone who digs luscious shiraz.

Made by the team at Matahiwi, who are known to over-deliver, this pinot does, and then some! Light and bright, it ticks the fruit, complexity and pinosity boxes with a flourish. Sam Kim calls it: “attractively fruited and beautifully complex”. We call it: “get in my glass and get in NOW!”.

This French red has a deep dark colour and dense cassis, forest floor and shaved graphite on the nose. The palate starts very elegantly and then boom - fruit and power. Dark berries and potpurri with super-fine and abundant tannin. There’s a hint of beef stock on the back palate with all that chalky tannin and black tea on the finish - lots going on. This is a long and powerful wine, with so many flavours and nuances to discover.

Pertaringa have crafted Hills cabernet at its best with this one. There are all the hallmarks of the variety - structure, herbaceousness and cassis. It's full aromas of black olives, plums, creamy chocolate, spice, and lifted floral notes. The palate is textured and balanced, elegant with fine acidity and chalky tannins.

Cap Royal Bordeaux Supérieur is a ‘sum of its parts’ sort of wine. Jean-René Matignon, winemaker at the renowned Chateau Pichon Baron, is in charge of the wine each vintage and uses his extensive connections in Bordeaux to source grapes from vineyards he sees fit for the year’s blend. This allows him to select the best fruit to achieve his vinous goal without being limited to one plot of land. The 2018 vintage is 75% merlot and 25% cabernet sauvignon. Intensely coloured with a nose of blackberry, blueberry and spice, the wine expresses more dark fruits, vanilla and toasted oak on the palate. It’s powerful and rich, yet refreshing.

Hailing straight outta Italy, this beauty has been hand-crafted with the best glera grapes born and raised in the Veneto region, making it a floral delight jam packed with golden apple, lemon and a whisper of wisteria. How magical.

Let's leave this one to wine critic Sam Kim who gave the wine 95 points: "Wonderfully ripe and inviting, the perfumed bouquet shows dark fruit intensity combined with violet, vanillin oak, cocoa and subtle spice notes, leading to a concentrated palate that’s opulent and persistent. The wine is powerful and richly textured with excellent fruit purity, seamlessly framed by silky tannins."

This Cape Agulhas white is unbelievable value for a very smart wine. This vintage has a splash of semillon which adds freshness and ageability. The dominant sauvignon blanc has all of the tropical and zesty notes that any sauv drinker would like, plus an ocean-side freshness. The vineyards lie only 9km from the sea and maybe I’ve been lured by their marketing, but I swear there’s a bit of sea-spray on the grapes. Either way, it is a holiday in a glass and I know that’s what I need right now.

The Nikkal chardonnay is made by the legendary Kate Goodman, who is one of our favourite women in wine. It's classic Yarra Valley - aromatic with grapefruit acidity and peach, pear and a chalkiness on the palate. This wine won't knock you over like some chardonnays, rather lead you gently by the hand for a wonderful experience.

Pinot blanc - not the most famous grape in the world, but bloody delicious and worth exploring. This is Gapsted's version of the grape from King Valley. Think of it as somewhere between young Hunter semillon and Mornington pinot gris. It’s fresh and zippy, but not neutral or dull either.

The Eden Valley would have to take the cake as Australia’s unsung hero of riesling, and with nearly 40 years of winemaking and viticultural experience under their belts, Irvine is a producer you can trust to bring the quality, year after year. Eden Valley riesling seems to champion those lovely floral aromatics, inviting us to taste. Crunchy green apples abound alongside typical lemon and lime zest. Mouth watering acidity provides excellent length.
