Why do we love this case?

We’ve finally done it! The ‘Fo has put together its first mixed pack of exclusively Barolo, six bottles from six producers covering three vintages. There’s boutique producers, regional power players, and an array of big scores and awards. Everything here is drinking well now, but as with any Barolo, there’s years and years of development ahead of them.

Each pack contains ONE bottle of the following:

Red
Nebbiolo

Vite Colte Essenze Barolo DOCG 2016
Violets
Vanilla
Tobacco
Full-bodied
Textured
Ethereal
James Suckling
5 Grapes Bibenda

We’ve gone a bit mad for Barolo recently at the ‘Fo. The loyalists keep demanding it so we keep importing it. And we’ve got another shining star right here. Vite Colte’s Essenze Barolo earned a lofty 95 points from James Suckling. Not too shabby! It’s made in a generous style with a nose of violets, vanilla and tobacco. The palate is quite structured, but certainly not shy with cherry, raspberry and even a hint of aged balsamic.

We’re extremely excited here at the ‘Fo to have this wine in our shed. Aculei was honoured as the Best in Show Barolo at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020. It doesn’t get much better than that. And with 2016 being a classic vintage in the region, you can be further assured this is a special drop. I could give you my tasting notes on the wine, but you’ll be better served by the writing of a real professional. So have a look at the Decanter review instead: "One of the finest cohorts of wines in this year's DWWA was the magnificent collection of 2016 Barolo we had the chance to judge, and confining ourselves to just two wines in the Best of Show collection wasn't easy. The first of these is dark, vivid, amply constituted and multi-dimensioned, with complex, close-woven aromas and a dense mesh of still-fruity flavours which ideally needs a year or two further to soften, though it is very approachable now. Look out for ample plum and pomegranate fruit, as well as Havana-leaf complexities in the finish. The way in which the tannins cling, densely and ripely, to those fruit flavours testifies both to 2016's generosity and to skilled vinification - and bodes well for the future."

There’s Barolo, and then there’s Barolo. You can find bottles from the right village or subregion, with all the acid and tannin you could want, that cost an arm and a leg - and yet somehow they don’t have that x-factor that makes drinking good Barolo something of an epiphany moment. With the absolute plethora of producers in the region, it can be really hard to know what’s good and what’s great. So how do you know what’s worth buying? I could prattle on about the merits of this wine for ages, but really Decanter said it best. In a few words, they called it “Barolo at its best! A masterpiece.” Their words sit alongside a massive 97 point score. That’s how you know. Don’t let this slip between your fingers, mofos.

Gardini Notes
Italian Import

Here’s a new one for us, a wine boasting a gaudy score of 99 points from Luca Gardini. The fruit is sourced from vineyards in Valentin, Piantà and Ornato, some with vines up to 50 years old. It then sees two years in a selection of large format botti before bottling. This is on the richer, more generous side of Barolo with a luminous ruby colour and complex nose of leather, exotic spices, autumn leaves, licorice and cocoa powder. The palate is lively with bright notes of cherry and tea leaves accompanied by vibrant acid and chalky tannins. It’s drinking quite well now, but as with any quality Barolo, this’ll age beautifully for another decade.

While 2014 doesn’t get the press that 2015 or 2016 gets for Barolo, the best producers still made great wines. The not-so-well-kept secret is that a lot of Cru Barolo wasn’t classified, so that fruit went into the Barolo-level wines for many wineries. In the case of this one, it’s the harvest off Ettore Germano’s vineyard in Prapó, which usually goes into one of their absolute top wines. You’ll find all the typical Barolo traits of dried fruits, dark cherry, tea leaves, spice and leather, but there’s also notes of vanilla and a fine tannin line that lets you know this wine is ready to drink. This might just be the under-the-radar Barolo offer of the year.

Mofo Fave

In a region as historical and traditionally rigid as Barolo, it’s so very important to support the up-and-comers. Manzone Giovanni is one of our favourite Barolo producers here at the ‘Fo and has been for quite some time. There’s a young winemaker working there called Francesco Giacosa who has started doing a bit of his own stuff under his eponymous label as a side project. It’s from a single vineyard, gets the same love and attention as the wines he makes for Manzone Giovanni, and at this stage is of shockingly good value for Barolo. The wine expresses plum, allspice, tea leaf and graphite, supported superbly by a minerality drawn from the soil. It’s six years old and starting to hit its prime, so get in now while the pricing is still ridiculously good.
