Why do we love this case?

We know the von Trapp family are all about raindrops on roses and crisp apple strudels, but here at the ’fo family we count the world’s best chardonnays as a few of our favourite things.

This case includes six chardonnays that are better than blue satin sashes:

White
Chardonnay
Yarra Valley

Better Half Langbrook Vineyard Chardonnay 2017
Citrus
Peach
Vanilla
Medium-bodied
Bright
Elegant

Well if this ain’t one of the finest showings of chardonnay (and it’s pinot stablemate, for that matter) out of the ‘17 vintage, I’ll eat my hat. May not have been sent to all the critics and have all the ratings, but I’m still willing to hang my hat on it - and digest it. Green apple, lime zest, oatmeal in a kind of brilliant bircher moment. The palate is fine, but with a little bit of leg too. There’s some vanilla-poached peach, a little crème brûlée action starting to happen. Small batch single vineyard goodness that won’t go begging, so get it while the going’s good.

Luca Maroni
Luca Maroni

Not only did Luca Maroni dish out 97 points to this chardy, he also called it “one of the best Italian wines of the year.” Always one for Italian flair, we’d take Mr Maroni with a pinch of truffle salt – but it is a very, very good wine. With aromas of cloves, vanilla, passionfruit and pineapple, this chardy has great balance and plump stonefruit flavours. It’s fresh and elegant with the fruit flavours persisting throughout the finish, and has a sparkly little gold medal to boot. One of the richest, tastiest Italian exports to come through our doors lately, our wine buyer John’s only message for you is “buy buy buy”, and not in an NSYNC kinda way.

Round
Elegant

Overlooking the Languedoc from altitudes of 250-600m, in the foothills of the Cevennes, the soils this wine is born from are exceptionally rich. Seemingly, that translates to effortless richness in the glass. Immediately there’s a round cashew note, with melon in the middle, laced with gentle asparagus and perky, subversive blood orange. It’s a silky-smooth nose that leads onto an impactful palate. Round, silky, long and fruit-forward for a Southern French chardy. They call it full-bodied, and I’d say it’s somewhere between medium and full in an Aussie context. Absolute crowd-pleaser, absolutely over-delivering at this price. Mini Burgundy? At this price, you betcha. It’s got value moves that Burgundy can only dream about.

Matahiwi’s premium chardonnay had our local wine padawan, Seb, dreaming of creamy risotto... and drinking more Hawke’s Bay wines. One at a time, Seb. “I bought the previous vintage so I’m excited we’ve got it again, and I haven’t actually had a bad wine from Hawke’s Bay to be completely honest with you.” “I think this is the perfect wine to have with dinner, like a creamy risotto. While it is balanced, they’re also not afraid to use a generous amount of oak. This is a barrel fermented wine, ripe with awesome stone fruits like peaches, nectarines and some nutty flavours coming through on the palate as well. I wish I actually drunk more wines from Hawke’s Bay.”

5 red star Halliday rated winery

This wine is all about subtle features - gentle fruit, relaxing texture and overall finesse. It’s elegant, and intense for sure, with a cheeky hint at fleshiness every now and then. Wonderfully well made wine, with true character and style. It’s one of those chardonnays I’d have a bit warmer, even take it out of the fridge and glug it into a decanter for half an hour. Thank me later.

La Preuve Par 5 Chardonnay 2016

According to one source, 2016 in Languedoc was a vintage of “enormous potential, with immediate aromatic expression in the whites and rosés which are showing delicious balance”. Sounds about right, for this brilliant chardy from a family winery that’s been at it for nigh on 90 years. Fresh, fruity, floral, balanced and bloody delicious.
