McLaren Vale, much like the Rhône Valley, is a region that is famed for its reds, but makes equally impressive whites. In this wine, the Rhône varieties of marsanne and viognier come together to make a textural white with nuttiness and driving acidity.

The grapes for this single vineyard wine are grown in the ’Montegrande’ vineyard, a hillside with volcanic soil and vines that average 30 years old. Peachy, pineappley rich and round, it’s the wine that straddles the crisp pinot grigio and plump chardonnay worlds perfectly. Super versatile, it’s a top pick to take to dinner parties. Chill it right down for freshness to bring out that acidity, or allow it to warm up a little to highlight the richness. This example is from the prime ‘classico’ zone, so there’s the capacity to age for a good while, for more of that nutty, leesy complexity to come to the fore.

Albariño is synonymous with Rias Baixas, in the cold green province of Galicia, still Spain, just above Portugal. It is a wine defined by the Atlantic. The vineyards it grows in are shaped by cooling sea breezes, with enough sun to get the berries perfectly ripe. The flavour, too, speaks of the sea. This is slatey and creamy, like succulent shellfish, with a delightful salinity. A squeeze of citrus keeps everything fresh and lively, while sunny peachy flavours flesh out the palate for a smooth, round finish. It’s beyond perfect with seafood, and a quintessential food wine, that is also dangerously drinkable on it’s own. Delicious!

Vermentino is most well known as the great white grape of Sardinia, but there’s more than a negligible amount grown here in Australia. This example is made by Adrian Santolin, an up-and-coming Victorian winemaker, and sourced from the Alpine Valley. The cool climate and high altitude work very well with vermentino, resulting in a complex wine with both tension and richness.

Few wines are quite so shamelessly smashable as a sem-sav blanc blend. And this one by Margaret River superstar producer Higher Plane seems to be hell-bent on topping the pile. Semillon brings drive and freshness, with citrus and delicate herbs. The savvy brings passionfruit, nashi pear and mouthwateringly juicy lime flavours. The result is a combo that’ll keep you enchanted from first sniff to last sip.
