Halliday Wine Companion

Hugh Cuthbertson (a.k.a. Mr. Hugh) has worked in the wine industry for nearly 40 years. Done with appealing to the masses, he now crafts exclusive small batches of high quality wine to enjoy with his friends and family, so the fact that we were able to get our hands on some is seriously exciting! Beautifully perfumed, the inviting bouquet is layered with ripe plum, cedar and cloves, and the elegant palate is delicately poised with berries and a touch of mint. From vines originally used for blending, Hugh recognised the quality of the fruit they were producing and gave internationally acclaimed wine critic, Huon Hooke, a glass of his straight cabernet franc. Upon asking whether it was worthy as a standalone wine, Huon’s response was, “Yes. It is very good indeed”. And you know what, Huon? We agree!

Domaine de Reveirolles, the producer behind this wine, starts the blend with grenache sourced from nearly 60-year old vines that grow over clay, limestone and sandstone. This is prime Côtes du Rhône terroir for sure. Varying portions of syrah, mourvédre and local grape counoise are added to the mix before 18 months in concrete tanks. The concrete allows the different varieties to integrate while still keeping the fruit purity as the primary feature. Blackberry, mocha and licorice lead the charge with the addition of blackcurrant and almond on the palate. There is evident tannin and acid, but it really is the fruit that steals the spotlight. And so it should.

Old vines add a certain special something for several key varieties, grenache being one of them. Bethany sources this wine from 50-80 year old vines still on their original rootstock in the Barossa Valley. The result is low yields leading to greater concentration of flavours such as raspberry, strawberry and cola, buoyed by striking minerality that begets a freshness on the palate. We’ve had previous vintages of this wine and loved it, we reckon the pros are beginning to catch on to a good thing. Just look at the scores!

We taste a lot of wines here at the ‘fo. And believe it or not, you can get tired of tasting vino, day in day out. But that means when you find a wine so utterly juicy, so ridiculously quaffable that you’d never tire of it, you’re not going to keep quiet about it. Gapsted have made one of those. Cherry, plum jam, hints of blueberries, a zippy acidity and soft, round mouthfeel is all you need for a delicious drinking, night in night out. Plus, it won’t cost an arm and a leg, either. Not even close. Can’t say fairer than that!

Things are happening in Sicily. Once a bastion for wines made exclusively from native grapes, it now serves up compelling blends using varieties not normally associated with the island. This one is half natives (nero d’avola and nerello mascalese) and half Bordeaux varieties (cabernet sauvignon and merlot). You get the best of both worlds, a ‘sum is greater than the parts’ wine so to speak. The fruit expression is cherry, mulberry and raspberry, and the secondary notes are vanilla, coffee and cocoa. It finishes with velvety tannins and great length. Let’s hear it for the evolution of Sicilian wine!
