What do you get when Chateau Tanunda blends big bold Barossa shiraz with big bold Barossa primitivo? Surprise, surprise! You get a big bold Barossa blend. And a rich red like this needs some time in barrel. How about 18 months in a combination of French and American oak? That cedary backbone lifts up the dark berry fruit, plum and spice of the wine. So if you’re into all that the Barossa can jam pack into a bottle, then this is your jam.

Mofo Fave Producer

Meet the Pájaro Rojo, or Red Bird, the light, bright mencía made by superstars Losada. This is from the cool region of Bierzo in the north west of Spain, famous for their medium-bodied and hyper-perfumed wines that range from playful to powerful. This one is at the playful end of the spectrum, but made by one of the region’s best - so no simple wine. If you are unfamiliar with the grape of region, imagine that this is Spain’s answer to Beaujolais. Bright, energetic fruity fun, with a soft and immensely satisfying finish. Mencía is a grape imbued with wondrously heady florals and bright summer berries, but a smidge more richness on the palate to back it up. If you’re fond of the flavours in gamay or a super-light grenache, this is a wine made for you.

Vent del Mar is Catalan for sea breeze, which references the Mediterranean wind that cools the grapes in the sea-adjacent region of Terra Alta, and aids in their organic farming. This shiraz/grenache blend is soft and fruity, with a few dark and stoney notes (likely from the shiraz). It's balanced, delicious and really likeable.

They source grapes from throughout the Languedoc region to make wines in both traditional and modern styles. This Flying Solo wine is a 60/40 blend of grenache and syrah from Minervois, one of the top areas in the region. It’s medium-bodied with soft tannins, a smooth palate and an energetic burst of bright red fruits. Simply enjoyable, gluggable and relax-on-the-deck-able wine.

Merlot seems to be on the comeback trail. Thistledown sources the fruit for this medium-bodied example from one of the cooler spots in Barossa. The resulting wine is silky and soft, doing everything you could imagine merlot doing, and doing it well. It’s packed with red fruit, tea leaf and a touch of vanillin oak that sits perfectly in the fruit. This well-balanced wine is super-tasty, and a good reason to take another look if you haven’t touched merlot since watching Sideways.
