We love Gapsted and their delicious Alpine wines. This is the first time we've tried their barbera and reckon it's a great addition to their range - medium-bodied, floral and food-friendly. Line it up next to the best of Piedmont to see how it compares, or just crack and enjoy!

Sam Kim
4.5 Stars Sam Kim

Another delicious wine from the team at Vintage Longbottom, this time from the Adelaide Hills, a region famous for its pinot noir, and to a lesser extent, their excellent syrah. This is a ripper blend with savoury notes from pinot and the spice from syrah, a deep and elegant wine wrapped up in both bright and brooding fruit and a long finish.

Twin Valleys Tempranillo 2019

The King Valley just seems to be kicking some real goals of late. It’s no longer only a spot for Italian varieties. Twin Valleys has produced a delicious tempranillo that is just juicy fun. A medium-bodied red with brisk acidity and soft tannins, it’s the perfect vino to crack at any moment. As fruity as it is dark, it has a very plummy nose, spiked with cinnamon, Chinese spice, and some tobacco and cedar backup notes. It’s ripe for the drinking now and I reckon it’ll round out in bottle for a couple of years and then you can get to some food and wine matching - if you can wait that long.

This is the third vintage of mencía from Bodegas y Viñedos Merayo that we have worked with, and their wines are just getting better and better. The wine comes from classic bush vines on the slopes and valley floor of Bierzo - with stoney clay soil bringing power that backs the aromatics of the mencía grape and cool nights for acid. It’s intense on both the nose and palate, but sitting firmly in medium-bodied territory. There is a floral note, heaps of plums, cranberries and a touch of spice. It has a long and persistent finish, hinting at the power you will find in some of their top wines.

So, why is this wine great? It’s the combination of high altitude vineyards, organic management and that beautiful and consistent Mediterranean climate that makes growing season a dream. Old and young vines make for complexity, picked at the right time to balance fruit and acidity. It’s on the darker, moodier side of the grenache spectrum, with well integrated tannin and a structure that will benefit from an hour in a decanter. I’ve heard that 90% of wines in Europe are drunk with food. With this wine’s power and freshness, you can see why.

New to the 'Fo

Tabu is the Arizu family's expression of an approachable, drink-now style of Malbec. It carries all the driving fruit intensity expected out of Mendoza with hints of cherry and spice, a smooth texture and ripe tannins. And since it’s a red wine from Argentina, you already know the perfect food pairing - a nice thick cut of steak grilled to perfection.
