Piandimare produces several different montepulciano, with this one being essentially their reserve wine. The reserve designation refers to more rigorous fruit selection and a full 12 months of ageing in oak. The wine is a deep ruby colour, with a nose of intense cherry and licorice. On the palate, these flavours persist and are joined by vanilla and tobacco leaf. The finish is rich and elegant with fine-grained tannin to support the fruit weight. As the name ‘Monolith’ suggests, this serves as a monument to one of Italy’s most famous wine styles.

New to the 'Fo

Minervois is a little region in the south of France that punches WAY above its weight. The reds are almost always some variation on the GSM blend with this one being only grenache and syrah. You’ll find complexity and ripeness with a bit of creaminess and richness on the full palate. The fruit, leaning towards blueberry, and white pepper hints are all supported by evident oak that leads to a long, satisfying finish.

Old Vine

Not too far outside of the CBD of Mendoza is an area called Luján de Cuyo. Within Luján de Cuyo lies Vistalba, one of the best places to grow old vine malbec in the entire world. Much of it is nearly dry-grown with the only irrigation coming in fortnightly releases of water from the nearby Mendoza River. It gets so hot and dry there that every drop matters. These old vines and extreme growing conditions provide grapes of unparalleled concentration. In the right hands, like those of Argentine Winemaker of the Year Hervé Fabre, the resulting wines are spellbinding. This one is 100% malbec and completely hand-harvested. 60% of the juice sees 12 months in French oak. This allows for some nice tannic structure without overpowering the bright fruit so indicative of Mendoza malbec. In the glass, you’ll find cherries, spices, vanilla, chocolate and sweet silky tannins. What a treat!

We love Gapsted and their delicious Alpine wines. This is the first time we've tried their barbera and reckon it's a great addition to their range - medium-bodied, floral and food-friendly. Line it up next to the best of Piedmont to see how it compares, or just crack and enjoy!

This wine is Spain's superstar tempranillo, spiced-up with a touch of syrah. It's from central south-east, where the sun shines and the grapes bask in the warmth to produce fruit-forward and delicious wines. Just on the plus side of medium bodied, the fruits is wrapped in just enough tannin, with a deliciously spiced finish.

So, why is this wine great? It’s the combination of high altitude vineyards, organic management and that beautiful and consistent Mediterranean climate that makes growing season a dream. Old and young vines make for complexity, picked at the right time to balance fruit and acidity. It’s on the darker, moodier side of the grenache spectrum, with well integrated tannin and a structure that will benefit from an hour in a decanter. I’ve heard that 90% of wines in Europe are drunk with food. With this wine’s power and freshness, you can see why.
