What can't Kilikanoon do? We know and love their riesling and shiraz, and are now very impressed by what they are doing with grenache. It's from old-vines and is hand-picked and made with love. It spends 15 months resting in oak before bottling and the resulting wine has beautifully integrated tannin. There are aromas of dark chocolate, blood plum, orange zest and nutmeg. The palate is textured and savoury, but with a core of concentrated berry and plum fruits.

Let’s see if you can guess what we’d pair with this one. It’s sangiovese, a classic Italian grape. It’s full of bright dark and spicy plums and cherries, tangy acid and hot-blooded vibrance. It’s medium bodied, so no need to look to any super-heavy food. There’s undertones of oregano and basil, giving that classic savoury character. A good crackle of drying tannins cry out for some fats to bind to - probably something melted, white and a bit stretchy. The round, wholesome feel of the wine probably needs a round, wholesome pairing too. It’s a wine to share, for food that’s usually sliced up and passed round too. I reckon we’re on the same page.

This is the third vintage of mencía from Bodegas y Viñedos Merayo that we have worked with, and their wines are just getting better and better. The wine comes from classic bush vines on the slopes and valley floor of Bierzo - with stoney clay soil bringing power that backs the aromatics of the mencía grape and cool nights for acid. It’s intense on both the nose and palate, but sitting firmly in medium-bodied territory. There is a floral note, heaps of plums, cranberries and a touch of spice. It has a long and persistent finish, hinting at the power you will find in some of their top wines.

This is Rioja’s new wave tempranillo that’s named after a crazy cat! Far from the dusty leather armchair wines most associated with the region, this is young, racy and much more fun. It’s for a young-at-heart crowd, bright, juicy and exuberant. Though, for all its fun, it tastes like a wine well above the price bracket. Raucously red fruited, with 10% American oak to give it some spice, it is compact and punchy in form. Great value for all of the spice, plums and tannins in this delicious wine.

Bodegas Olivares are a family-run winery in the sunny region of Jumilla in the south-east of Spain that we’ve been working with for many years now. This is a rework of the popular GSM, with the local monastrell (mataro to Aussies), taking the lead role to make a MGS. The wine has sun-drenched summer fruit with a fresh, breezy acidity from the high altitude in which it’s grown. With sweet, swarthy berries and an exotically spiced finish, we can attest that it’s bloody hard to turn down a second (or third) glass.
