Why do we love this case?

Think outside the box, mofos. I mean, the wine still comes in a box, so don’t dispense with the idea entirely. But don’t get stuck in there yourself. We’ll need room for the wine, firstly. But also being cooped up in a cardboard cube means you’ll miss out all the fun we’re having with these delightful alternative grapes. Variety is the spice of life and these varieties have all the exotic new flavours you could dream of. Go on, don’t be shy. Dive on in!

Every case contains one of each of the following:

Zinfandel

Marietta Cellars OVR Lot 69 Zinfandel NV

This is a wine that really captures the spirit of California. Sure, there are more famous examples of single vineyard this or unique clones of that, made by multi-million dollar wineries, that’re indisputably excellent. But that’s not what this is about. This is a family-run winery making an old vine field blend of classic Californian grapes, in the same time-honoured way for over 30 years now. It’s a heart-warming thought. The NV, by the way, stands for ‘non vintage’, meaning it’s a blend of different wines from over a few years, much like many Champagnes. Rather than a single vintage having all the fun, like is most common in still wines, a blend of younger and older wines allows for both bright fruitiness and deeply aged complexity. The wine’s simply delicious, and a fun, unpretentious way to enjoy American wine beyond just being a product. It’s mostly zinfandel, so there’s plenty of plush, soft fruit richness, balanced by just enough tannin and a ripple of lively acid. Perfect to see you through the winter, and beyond.

Austrian import

This grape has a profile quite unlike any other. We’re talking flabbergastingly bright, juicy cherries, backed up by a uniquely peppery finish. I personally adore these wines, after trying them for the first time in Vienna. Try to picture the scene: I was strolling through the Nashmarkt, Vienna’s famous old market, with my brand-spanking new fiancée. It was a bitterly cold January, drizzling and windy, but nothing could dampen our spirits. There are lots of butchers in the Naschmarkt, but we spotted one that looked particularly inviting. It was tiny, most of the space inside was occupied by four friends of the owner, sharing a large platter of cured meats and some very generous glasses of wine on their lunch breaks. They beckoned to us and we went into the warmth, sharing a bottle of the most bloody delicious red I’ve ever tasted (later we found it was indeed Blaufränkisch), and some of the funniest and most halting conversation we’ve ever had with four drunk blokes on an extended lunch break who only spoke German. This wine take me there. If it can give you even a hint of that, we’ll have done our jobs.

In a world where imported wines often cost so much as to simply not be worth it, this beauty is a very welcome relief. It’s not Barolo, but it was never meant to be! It’s a delicious nebbiolo from Italy, with bags of character, at a price that means you can actually enjoy drinking it any day of the week. How’s that for a revolutionary concept? There’s all the acid and tannin you’d expect from the grape, framing a rustic picture of violets, rosehip and sour cherries. In the spirit of the wine, leave your white truffles for the real exxy stuff. This one is happiest with a simple Bolognese or cheese sauce, and poured round the table in hearty glugs. Cin cin!

Argentina is rightly famous for malbec, but its far from the only string to its bow. Variety is the spice of life, they say, and they do some damn good things with cabernets (amongst others) there, too. Not ready to abandon malbec completely, though? How about a compromise? Mix it up with a malbec cab franc blend. The International Wine Challenge said it best in their review: “This simply has everything: violets, peonies, plums and damsons. The palate unites concentration with joyous juiciness. Plump and fresh; rounded but vivid. A wine full of life, simply gorgeous.” Simply couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

Big Easy Radio are a winery on a mission. They’re out to break down preconceived notions of what wine should look like. Bottled in old sherry bottles, this certainly looks different. It’s an eye catching addition to the picnic benches in your local park, that’s for sure. But the important stuff’s the juice, right? Well, they’ve nailed that, too. We’re talking firework-bright, juicy red berries, with a sizzle of tangy bitter orange and a crackle of exotic spice. We defy you to not want to pour this down your front and roll around on the ground in tastebud overload-induced ecstasy. How’s that for altering perceptions?

Forgive me if you speak the lingo already, mofos. “Canto di Lago” translates to the rather evocative “song of the lake”. We’re not entirely sure which lake they’re referring to, but after a sip of this beauty we’re all singing the same tune here at Mofo HQ. Barbera is a grape from Piedmont, in Italy’s northeast. Lagrein, on the other hand, is less well known and hails from the northwest. Their meeting could only really happen Down Under, where a grand tradition of trying new things with old Italian varieties is beginning in earnest. Winemakers are making their own styles, histories and delicious wines right here, free from the restraints of the old world. This one’s chockablock with earthy red cherries, finely ground pepper and very dark cocoa powder. There’s the lightness of foot common to all those high acid Italian grapes that makes for peerless smashability, and standout food pairings.
