Why do we love this case?

With such illustrious South Australian neighbours as the Barossa, Clare, and Eden Valleys, and the likes of McLaren Vale and Coonawarra just a stone’s throw away, the Adelaide Hills risk being overlooked.

That’d be an absolute crime, though. That elevated, rarified air and cooler climate makes for majestic freshness, magical drive and absurd elegance in wines. Get across some of our faves from the region in this snazzy mixed six.

Tim Knappstein and his Riposte label have become synonymous with quality pinot from the Adelaide Hills and this vino is no exception. It’s bright and light but don’t let that fool you. There is serious complexity at play here. You’ve got all the best characters of high-quality pinot. Lots of complex aroma, there is a savoury whole bunch component too that leads to a silky and long palate. A pinot for every and any occasion.

High up in the Hills is a cracking place to start in the hunt for shimmeringly fresh chardy. This is bright as sunshine and lively as the West Wind. It opens with zippy citrus and refreshing green apple, before texture and complexity from 100% French oak barrel maturation comes into play. It’s spiced and creamy on the finish, going for miles before a long and lazy fade out. Stellar stuff!

Gorgeously aromatic and crunchy as only cool climate shiraz can be. The nose on this is electric, with juicy fruit, cloves, bay leaves and pepper sailing out of the glass and grabbing your attention instantly. The palate doesn’t disappoint, either. There’s real freshness and vivacity, with fruit richness backed by coffee grounds and aromatic herbs. There’s complexity to spare, and plenty of time to explore it in a near-endless finish. It’s food-friendly for sure, but in spite of the savoury characters on offer, it doesn’t need it. It’s delicious every which way.

Adelaide Hills Saint Martins Wine Show 2018

Adelaide Hills syrah can be intriguing, with a climate that offers a fresher example of the grape, without lacking concentration or intensity. This syrah by winemaker and grape grower Simon Tolley is a great example of the style, from the high slopes of his vineyard in Woodside. Soft tannins support a mouthful of fruit and spice - plum, berries and cherries abound. The wine is classically mid-weight, as is expected for the cooler Adelaide Hills, but is sure to impress Shiraz lovers.

Langhorne Creek Wine Show 2019

Originally native to the Dao region of Portugal, this ripper red has found a second home in South Australia. Vinteloper is an Adelaide Hills based winery, but actually looked to Langhorne Creek for this warm weather loving variety. Absolutely bursting with juicy fruit, look to find explosive plum and blackcurrant notes wrapped in uniquely varietal airs of lavender and violet. An earlier harvest allowed the wine to retain freshness and acidity, keeping a shapely medium-body in spite of the intensity of flavour.

Among the many wonderful things to have found a home in the Adelaide Hills, the Austrian grüner veltliner isn’t perhaps the first that comes to mind. But it’s undeniably settled right in. It’s got its own set of fun flavours to get around too. Perfect for hard-to-pair-with foods like salads and asparagus, it has a charming citrus and herb profile, with an unmistakable sprinkling of white pepper that’ll make you sit up in your seat. There are florals, too, in jasmine and acacia. Dry and crisp, but charming in its own unique way. This is definitely worth a try.
