We’ve been importing a couple of wines from Tuscan producer Lornano for a few years now. When we saw how well Le Bandite fared in the Decanter World Wine Awards, we realised it was time for us to expand the range. This is Chianti Classico Riserva of the highest order. 100% sangiovese sourced from a vineyard at 330 metres over shale and alluvial soil. After fermentation, it sees about 20 months in French oak, which adds a cedary backdrop to the wine. This is more of a complement to the fruit rather than an overt presence thankfully, as the wine is wonderfully in balance. You’ll find black cherry, plum, licorice, earthen notes and even hints of balsam in the wine. The tannins are velvety and lead into a long mineral-laden finish.

Platinum Medal Decanter World Wine Awards

When one thinks about the best of the best from Bordeaux, the famous First Growths come to mind. So it came as a bit of a surprise to us when this petit chateau red took home Best in Show for Bordeaux at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020. This award generally goes to a wine that is well over $1000 a bottle. We’re nothing if not persistent in our buying here at the ‘Fo, so we had to go out and get this wine. What’s especially appealing about this merlot-dominant blend is that it’s pretty much ready to drink. You don’t have to lay it down for 10+ years before it’s approachable. It might be time to start rethinking what we think we know about Bordeaux.

This stunner is from La Liviniere in Minervois in southern France. La Liviniere is known for producing the best reds in the region using the traditional GSM components. This one is 50% syrah, 40% grenache and 10% mourvèdre, making it an SGM (if you’re being pedantic). It’s certified organic and has that Rhône-esque nose of plum and licorice. It’s intense, serious and absolutely delicious.

Fattoria Svetoni has quite the lofty history. Pietro Leopoldo, Grand Duke of Tuscany, spent years building the property. He originally named it ‘Leopoldina’ cuz I guess that’s what you did back then. Wine production began all the way back in 1865 and once the winery changed hands, it was renamed Fattoria Svetoni. They grow primarily prugnolo gentile, a variety of sangiovese, and produce several wines from the grape. This is Svetoni’s easygoing, good natured sangio. It has a bright ruby colour, highlights cherry on the fruit spectrum, and supports that with hints of chocolate and silky tannins. Be forewarned that it’s such a smooth drink, you might find the bottle empty before you know what’s happened.

From ‘Les Dissedents’ range of Maison Ventenac, this 100% grenache is called Le Paria (the outcast). This references the Rhône variety being planted in Languedoc-Roussillon, where the producer believes that it thrives. Weighting in at a perfect 14%, the wine is surprisingly light-bodied, vibrant and full of life. No oak was used in the wine and the clarity of fruit is the result of this decision. Raspberries mingle with cloves and sour cherries with mineral notes. According to the producer, “these wines are uncompromising, chiselled, precise and direct.” We agree and so does Decanter Magazine, as this was included in its Top 100 Wines of the Year 2020.

When the Tuscan winemakers decided to blend in cabernet and merlot with their sangiovese, minds were blown and the Supertuscan was born. Sounds like a superhero origin story, I know. But it’s really the tale of a very traditional wine region doing something entirely unconventional. And it worked a charm. This one is half sangio and a quarter each cab and merlot. It’s given six months in older oak to build structure yet still let the fruit sing. Look for cherries, raspberries, chocolate and a touch of vanillin.
