Why do we love this case?

This is the summit, mofo. The ‘Best in Class’ of the wine world. Wines beloved by the experts and novices alike. The wines that turned even the haughtiest of critics into star-struck fanboys and girls who mysteriously ‘forget to spit it out’ during a high-brow tasting panel. The concept behind this pack is pretty simple; there’s only one condition to entry - a 95 point or higher award. The vast majority need not apply. We already separate the wheat from the chaff here at the ‘fo. This is the artisan stonebaked masterwork that results.

Each case contains ONE bottle of each of the following:

Red
Cabernet Sauvignon
Coonawarra

School House Cellar Release Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Allspice
Plum
Cedar
Medium-bodied
Bright
Concentrated

We all know that fine Coonawarra cabernet ages extremely well. Think George Clooney or Brad Pitt well. So getting our hands on a 2010 Schoolhouse, the top of the range from CW Wines, was a no-brainer. It’s still plenty powerful, but age as softened the edges just a touch to give it a bit more gravitas. Blackberry and mulberry, roasted nuts and black olive, all in perfect harmony. This is great stuff that will prove to be worthy of the A-list for years to come.

Five Stars Sam Kim

This is your archetypal rich and full-bodied Vale shiraz. III Associates know their target market, and their target market know them. So it’s packed with ripe purple fruit, sticks of vanilla and generous licks of coffee and caramel. Named for the Black Bay of Biscay Clay, the vines are grown in, which leads to small grapes of wonderful density. So no wonder the colour, flavour and all the things are dialled up in this wine. The wine spends a year in a combinations of French and American oak barrels - largely new - so there is tannin, notes of cedar and even more power. Lovers of no-holds-barred flavour unite!

Here comes that ‘all things to all people’ shiraz! Turns out you can please all of the people ALL of the time and Byron & Harold have figured out exactly how to do so. The wine's got the quintessential Great Southern smoothness and medium body with quite lifted aromatics. Think plum, mulberry, blackberry, pepper, chocolate and mocha with great concentration and a nice, long finish. 18 months in both new and old French oak gives it a little hit of exotic spices and cedar, rounding out a wine experience that’ll please both the connoisseur and the newbie alike.

We haven’t had a wine from Chilean producer Indómita since the 2015 vintage. Not sure why, it just kinda happened that way. But there’s nothing like a Gold medal and 96 point score from Decanter to remind you that it’s time to reignite that relationship! This 50/50 blend of cabernet sauvignon and carménère (the unofficial national grape of Chile) is an absolute stunner. Carménère serves in the same role as merlot (some argue they are potentially the same genetically) in making what shapes up to be an exceptional Chilean take on a Bordeaux-style red blend. It’s dark, spicy, full of fruit, framed with structure, and given to an incredibly lengthy finish. Welcome back, Indómita!

Château La Borie, one of the few domains in Côtes-du-Rhône bearing the name Château, was built in the 17th century. Since then, it has passed through several families and is under the care of the Margnat family today. Situated ten kilometres from the left bank of the Rhône river, the winery produces four wines from its 75 hectares of vines. La Borie’s Côtes-du-Rhône Villages is a blend of syrah, grenache and mourvèdre sourced from vines over clay and stone. Macerated dark fruits drive the palate of the wine with minerality, spice and chocolate as complements. This is one that’s ready to go now but has nearly a decade of life if you choose to let it age.
