95+ Point Pack - Shiraz & Co Edition 4.0
- Mixed
- Various
This is the summit, mofo. The ‘Best in Class’ of the wine world. Shiraz beloved by the experts and novices alike. The wines that turned even the haughtiest of critics into star-struck fanboys and girls who mysteriously ‘forget to spit it out’ during a high-brow tasting panel. The concept behind this pack is pretty simple; there’s only one condition to entry - a 95 point or higher award. The vast majority need not apply. We already separate the wheat from the chaff here at the ‘fo. This is the artisan stonebaked masterwork that results.
Each case contains TWO bottles each of the following wines:
Shiraz 2016

96pts Limestone Coast Wine Show | Gold Medal Limestone Coast Wine Show
From a little-known corner of South Australia, somewhere along the Riddoch Highway, comes this exceptional value shiraz. It’s absolutely jam-packed with stewed fruit, chocolate and licorice. Ripe and delicious flavour that packs a real punch, softened only by a bit of bottle age. It’s carried on the back of bright acidity, lifting blackberries, bramble, black cherry and prosciutto notes alike to a long and delectable finish. This has to be up there in terms of best value buys. Whether you’re shopping for a pantry-stocking quaffer or something to share with the family over Sunday lunch, this is a great value contender with a foot in both camps.

The universally-adored Lou Miranda shiraz is back with a roar for the 2018 vintage. Still unmistakably Barossa, still as ferociously opulent as the name ‘Golden Lion’ suggests. This year’s season produced juice of incredible quality, loaded to the brim with dark berries, plums and dramatic spices. Maturation in American oak gives both delightful toastiness and a fabulously creamy and coconut-rich finish. It’s big, bold, and ballsy drinking to sink your teeth into at important family get-togethers. This beast will cellar for a decade or more, easily. That’s no reason to shy away from opening it though. We’re betting this lion won’t stay caged for long.

We're going to let wine critic Sam Kim do the work here: "A delectably expressed shiraz; the perfumed bouquet shows dark plum, sweet cherry, subtle spice and floral aromas with hints of cocoa and cedar. It's wonderfully weighted and rounded on the palate, delivering fabulous fruit purity together with silky texture and rounded tannins. Flavoursome and instantly appealing. At its best: now to 2034."

This lovely red is from Corbières, which is one of the warmer areas in France, resulting in a slightly richer and more powerful wine. It’s made from 30% syrah, 30% grenache and 40% carignan. The syrah brings spice and acid, the grenache brings jubey red fruits and the carignan adds an opulence and purple fruits. It’s medium, bordering on full body, full of dark red fruits, spice and lovely drying tannins. It’s sure to be a great drink over the next 5 years.

Let's leave this one to wine critic Sam Kim who gave the wine 95 points: "Wonderfully ripe and inviting, the perfumed bouquet shows dark fruit intensity combined with violet, vanillin oak, cocoa and subtle spice notes, leading to a concentrated palate that’s opulent and persistent. The wine is powerful and richly textured with excellent fruit purity, seamlessly framed by silky tannins."

Cape Agulhas. Ever heard of it? Pop it into google maps and take a look at exactly where this drop hales from. You can’t get much more south of Africa than that. It’s where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet and you could certainly classify it as a maritime climate, cool enough to produce the elegant, lifted, lighter and peppery styles of shiraz. If this is your first taste of South African wine, you will not be disappointed.
