Old vine grenache from Rioja is a tempting prospect at the best of times, and when it tastes like this it’s damn near irresistible. Grown at 800m of elevation, that lofty position ensures freshness and liveliness to the fruit. Ravishing cherries and blueberries dominate, backed by crackles of spice and a satisfying finish. Old grenache vines imbue a wine with a magic all its own, so long as you don’t get in the way. The magic is alive and well here.

Built with big shoulders, the Viñalba Gran Reservado Malbec is text-book Mendoza. Big, juicy black fruits are well supported with dusty French oak and fine, drying tannins. No wonder Argentinean steak houses the world over have wines like this on their menu. It cries for charry flame-licked smokey barbeque goodness. The tannins here are the perfect match to cut through some serious protein. Winemaker Hervé J Fabre aims to balance power and elegance. Job done!

I don’t normally like to jump straight into a tasting note when writing why we love a wine, but when I do... Smells like a cherry clafoutis, and I think I’ve had one once in my life, but it took me right back there. There’s that dark, sweet and sour note, just-hit-the-frying pan butter and wafts of pancake-like dough. Overlaid with a dark chocolate note, it’s equal parts deep and dark as fresh and crunchy. The palate follows suit, with expected bright crunch and soft, silky fruit, but layered with a dusty cocoa tannin vibe and a brilliant tension between seriousness and playfulness.

Wines from the Côtes du Rhône may just be the official sponsors of good times. There are many strings to their bow (it’s looking more like a harp at this point), but what they do best is fun, juicy delightfulness. Here’s an example with spicy ripe cherries, crunchy blackberries and a fine structure that gently gives the juice shape. It’s long and pleasantly round, with some very fine tannins. It’s also organically grown and hand-harvested from very old terraced vineyards on pebbly soils. A red that’s delicious on its own, or that does poultry and white meats best. The toughest part of the whole experience is the cork, and that’s not stopping anyone.

Like a good opera - this starts with a wave of deep baritone notes, finishing with a nice crescendo. Think plums, blackcurrants and maraschino cherries, lifting the tempo and intensity with violet and spicy / savoury high notes. And of course - there’s that traditional line of Italian acidity and tannin to give it some grunt. With that structure in mind, of course it can handle Italy’s cuisine; richly textured tomato-based sauces, bistecca alla fiorentina (big thick steak on the T-bone), or your favourite wood-fired pizza. Or even a simple chunk of parmesan. Splash it around. Get some air into it and enjoy.

The 98pt result of an experiment to produce new flavours in a Tuscan wine. Frankly, it still tastes like a Tuscan to me. There’s cherries galore and the dusty gravel path tannins of a Chianti. But, there’s no denying it’s a stunning wine, so whether it’s wildly different or not is pretty much irrelevant. It’s still a no-brainer with pasta or pizza, big family gatherings under the pergola, rolling hillsides and golden sunsets. You could say they’ve Sir Pass-ed themselves.
