Why do we love this case?

This case has it all. From the wines the Halliday Wine Companion waxes lyrical about, to the ones that stunned its writers into silence. Just one thing unites them all. They’re the best of the best. Only 95 points and above.

An Adelaide Hills favourite of ours at the ‘fo., The Lane has been producing since the early 90’s, and each year goes from strength to strength, producing wines of consistent quality. In more recent years, they have taken a strong approach to sustainability, incorporating environmentally conscious practices into everything they do. This cabernet is sourced from a single vineyard in the Adelaide Hills, grown on their estate. Whilst spending a period of time in oak, the wine developed notes of cedar and soft chalky tannins. The nose is a delightful bouquet of blackcurrants and choc-mint, with a delicate herbal note of bayleaf coming through. It’s bursting with blackberry and cassis, blueberries and is all tied together harmoniously.

Highly-pointed single vineyard Barossa shiraz almost always comes at a hefty premium. It’s so refreshing to find one that packs all that power and density into a ‘drink more than once a month’ kind of price. Schubert Estate has given this the full Rolls Royce treatment, from hand harvesting of the grapes, basket pressing and 18 months in seasoned French oak. It’s nearly black to the eye, bursting with blackberry, clove, chocolate and coffee. Viscous, earthy and savoury, this shiraz has earned its place at the table amongst the elite, but slips in the door on a discounted ticket.

Wine Pilot

Warramunda Estate has packed an enchanting wine into a beautiful bottle. The wine is appropriately labelled as syrah, a nod to the medium-bodied weight of the wine, the silky mouthfeel and a savouriness drawn from whole bunch pressing. The nose is of red fruits and roses and the palate carries pepper, spice and earthiness. If you are into cool climate shiraz, this is the complete package. Plus it’s crafted by Ben Haines, one of Victoria's top winemakers. What more could you ask for?

Single Vineyard

Yelland & Papps have crafted a fantastic single vineyard Barossa shiraz made from old vines on the western ridge of the valley. There’s opulence, fruit weight, fine tannins and a long finish on this one. Wild yeast has been utilised before nearly two years in a mix of new and seasoned French and American oak. Plum, mulberry and clove jump out of the glass upon first whiff. The palate expands even further with vanilla, licorice, dark chocolate and graphite. Smoothness, complexity and depth all wrapped up in a velvety package. This is really, really good stuff.

Five Star Red Halliday Rated Winery

Salomon estate, founded by Austrian (not Australian) Bert Salomon, has been put on the map by the incredible balance the wines strike between classic South Aussie flavour and distinctly European restraint. This shiraz cabernet could have been a huge, double shotgun-toting monster, with tannin to blow your face off. Instead, it’s lifted, juicy, lively, nuanced and textural. There’s complexity for days, and plenty of room to enhance it through a long stint in the cellar. Whether you’re an Old World fanatic, or die-hard true blue Aussie oenophile, there’s something for everyone to agree on here. It’s delicious, and bloody well made wine.

We’re a talkative bunch here at the ‘fo, especially when we’re perched at the tasting bench tucking in to the good stuff and sharing our thoughts. But as we tried the Lodge Hill Shiraz, an eerie silence swept the room. Some stared out the window in deep contemplation, some with a bowed head and a cheeky grin. So this is what wine from Halliday’s Winery of the Year tastes like. Gee, our wonderful members will be over the moon that they get access to this. It’s classic Clare shiraz, with rich dark fruit coupled with an elegant restraint, aromatic nose and a long finish. With a swathe of medals and points already, it ain’t just Halliday that digs this wine. Tremendous drinking for you and (if you can bear to share) the family.
