Why do we love this case?

This is the summit, mofo. The ‘Best in Class’ of the wine world. Wines beloved by the experts and novices alike. The wines that turned even the haughtiest of critics into star-struck fanboys and girls who mysteriously ‘forget to spit it out’ during a high-brow tasting panel. The concept behind this pack is pretty simple; there’s only one condition to entry - a 95 point or higher award. The vast majority need not apply. We already separate the wheat from the chaff here at the ‘fo. This is the artisan stonebaked masterwork that results.

12pk, each case contains TWO bottles of the following wines:

Mofo Fave

The universally-adored Lou Miranda shiraz is back with a roar for the 2017 vintage. Still unmistakably Barossa, still as ferociously opulent as the name ‘Golden Lion’ suggests. This year’s season produced juice of incredible quality, loaded to the brim with dark berries, plums and dramatic spices. Maturation in American oak gives both delightful toastiness and a fabulously creamy and coconut-rich finish. It’s big, bold, and ballsy drinking to sink your teeth into on important family get-togethers. This beast will cellar for a decade or more, easily. That’s no reason to shy away from opening it though. We’re betting this lion won’t stay caged for long.

Built with big shoulders, the Viñalba Gran Reservado Malbec is text-book Mendoza. Big, juicy black fruits are well supported with dusty French oak and fine, drying tannins. No wonder Argentinean steak houses the world over have wines like this on their menu. It cries for charry flame-licked smokey barbeque goodness. The tannins here are the perfect match to cut through some serious protein. Winemaker Hervé J Fabre aims to balance power and elegance. Job done!

Mofo fave

If you had to sum up Great Southern shiraz in a word? Berries. Not jammy, overripe nonsense, but sweetly tangy, wild delights from a temperate climate. Herbaceous crunch and frisky-but-fine tannin frame some seriously gorgeous blueberries and strawberries, while fresh acidity keeps things lively. Beyond versatile, this is truly a shiraz for all seasons.

If you’ve been a mofo for a while, you’ll probably know why we absolutely adore Haselgrove. If not, you’re in for a treat. This shiraz cabernet blend combines the best of what we love about two of the world’s favourite grapes. Plush, fruitcakey opulence and seductively mouthfilling richness, framed by cabernet’s inimitable structure and age-ability. McLaren Vale’s more than stepped up to the plate here, too, giving fantastic complexity and unmistakable terroir into the mix.

Winery of the Year, Wines of Chile 2016

This only scored 97 points and platinum medal in the Decanter World Wine awards, mofos. No biggie. It’s not hard to see why, though. The nose is dangerously seductive - all classic cabernet notes of bell pepper, spice, mulberry and cedar. Then the palate benefits from driving acidity and supple tannins. It’s driven and measured, but hands out immense satisfaction every step of the way.

Italian import

Like a good opera - this starts with a wave of deep baritone notes, finishing with a nice crescendo. Think plums, blackcurrants and maraschino cherries, lifting the tempo and intensity with violet and spicy / savoury high notes. And of course - there’s that traditional line of Italian acidity and tannin to give it some grunt. With that structure in mind, of course it can handle Italy’s cuisine; richly textured tomato-based sauces, bistecca alla fiorentina (big thick steak on the T-bone), or your favourite wood-fired pizza. Or even a simple chunk of parmesan. Splash it around. Get some air into it and enjoy.
