I'd like to introduce Mr James Halliday and his observation of this wonderful 95 point wine: "This is a powerhouse, dripping black fruits, licorice and spice on a seemingly endless palate, burying the tannins and oak in its folds - their time will come." Powerhouse - wow!!

Our mate at Rosenthal called vintage 2018 just about the best of the past 25 years. The long, languorous ripening of rockstar fruit gave second-to-none complexity. Rosenthal's cabernet is all about blueberries, violets and plums, with fine and frisky tannins giving even more life to an already lively palate. It finishes gloriously, with notes of toast and dark chocolate lingering for aeons between sips.

Five Geese make fantastic reds across syrah, grenache and nero in McLaren Vales - home of the plus, velvety red. We like all of their wines, but their old vine grenache is a particular stand-out. There ie a savoury edge from whole bunch fermentation and lashings of plum and ripe berries. It's long, balanced and a really classy drop.

With the arsenal of meticulous vineyards and winemaking prowess at their disposal, under the careful eye of Steve Webber, it’s no great surprise that De Bortoli are spinning out excellent wine after excellent wine. Despite the lack of surprise, the delight isn’t diminished at all. This wine’s been kept for the optimum time prior to being released into the wild, and it’s now singing. Does what cool climate shiraz/syrah does best: savoury but floral, fruity and meaty. Layers galore. Textural, but soft. Flavoursome, but not heavy. Polished. In a word: lovely.

If ever there was a bottle for a dark wine cellar, it’s this shiraz from Teusner. The label even glows in the dark. Halliday called the ‘14 version of this badass Barossan a “rich, fruit-slapping mouthful”, and this year he said: “The flavours pop up like the plastic clowns at the Easter Show”. In short, it’s a guaranteed thriller. Just remember to watch out when the lights go out…

Salomon estate, founded by Austrian (not Australian) Bert Salomon, has been put on the map by the incredible balance the wines strike between classic South Aussie flavour and distinctly European restraint. This shiraz cabernet could have been a huge, double shotgun-toting monster, with tannin to blow your face off. Instead, it’s lifted, juicy, lively, nuanced and textural. There’s complexity for days, and plenty of room to enhance it through a long stint in the cellar. Whether you’re an Old World fanatic, or die-hard true blue Aussie oenophile, there’s something for everyone to agree on here. It’s delicious, and bloody well made wine.
