Why do we love this case?

This case has it all. From the wines the Halliday Wine Companion waxes lyrical about, to the ones that stunned its writers into silence. Just one thing unites them all. They’re the best of the best. Only 95 points and above.

Each case contains TWO of the following wines:

5 star Halliday rated winery

Lovers of cooler climate shiraz, look no further. Made very much in the French syrah style, this is more medium bodied, but pack a punch in complexity and concentration. There’s bright blueberries, liquorice, iodine and black pepper. The dense core of sweet, dark fruit is lifted by a savoury richness. It’s seen 35% new, large format French oak, giving it shape and structure without covering the nuanced aromatics. It’s more subtle than your Barossa stuff, but no less powerful. A wine for simply cooked steak and lashings of black pepper if ever there was one!

As the Halliday Wine Companion so elegantly, and bizarrely, puts it, “The mound of flavour is high.” Look, mofo, we have no idea what that means, or indeed why a world-renowned wine critic would opt for such a phrase. We’re chalking it up to Mr. Halliday having enjoyed this wine a little too much, which is perhaps better than any award or point score anyway. In any case, the ripe, assertive palate is a delight to dive into. Plush, juicy berries, ample tannin, fresh acidity, it’s got all you need and more for some seriously good drinking.

Umamu are the mature-vino masters of Margs. Take this 2010 shiraz, for example. It’s been held back in perfect conditions at the winery until they finally deemed it ready. And now… it’s absolutely singing! The nose is a chorus of mint, earth, dusty dark cocoa and succulent blueberries. The palate is unbelievably lively, given its age. There’s still plenty of fruit, but it’s softer, rounder, and altogether more together (if that makes any sense). If you’ve not yet experienced a wine aged past a cursory few years, an eye-opening world of discovery awaits!

Unmistakable Coonawarra cabernet from a genre-defining producer. Dr Richard Hamilton of Leconfield is descended from one of the original Adelaide winemaking families, and great-great-grandson of his namesake, Richard Hamilton, who began the family tradition in 1837. That’s a very long history of winemaking excellence, and every day’s experience is on full display right here. The nose of this ripper cabernet shows dense mulberry and rosemary, with a core of intense blackberries and baking spice. The palate displays extremely finely placed tannins, complementing a bright acidity and classic full-bodied varietal flavours. This is about as classic as you can get, and will only get better and better for years to come.

The funnest winery in the Vale doubles down on deliciousness with this devilishly smashable bottleful of fun. Monte–sangio blends aren’t the most common combo going but, having tasted this, we do wonder why. Montepulciano brings the plush pummy wonder, while sangiovese sparkles with savoury sizzle. Barbecue weather? Chuck on some snags and pour your mates a mug of this. You’ll be the world-famous as the best host in town.

Salomon estate, founded by Austrian (not Australian) Bert Salomon, has been put on the map by the incredible balance the wines strike between classic South Aussie flavour and distinctly European restraint. This shiraz cabernet could have been a huge, double shotgun-toting monster, with tannin to blow your face off. Instead, it’s lifted, juicy, lively, nuanced and textural. There’s complexity for days, and plenty of room to enhance it through a long stint in the cellar. Whether you’re an Old World fanatic, or die-hard true blue Aussie oenophile, there’s something for everyone to agree on here. It’s delicious, and bloody well made wine.
