"This is hands down my favourite BYO restaurant in the city. Not only is the food amazing, but the best part is that you order EVERYTHING on iPads (yep, no human interaction necessary). My must-have dishes are the fried quail, the crispy fried eggplant with chilli and the xiao long bao. Pair these with a few bottles of crisp Gruner Veltliner from Allram, and you're in for a helluva night." - Jordan

"I go to Tao Dumplings when I'm feeling a touch fancy but don't want to break the bank. It's the perfect spot for a quick bite with my hubby or a fun night out with my girlfriends. I always order the steamed wontons with Szechuan chilli sauce - it's got a hum of chilli more than the burn. I always bring a bottle of Beaujolais. Plenty of fruit, not too much tannin and lower alcohol levels to make sure any spicy dishes don't blow your head off!" - Emma

"From the welcoming staff to the delicious food, this Northside gem is my favourite. Start with the Hanoi Rose spring rolls and the soft-as-butter salt and pepper squid. Team up with a bottle of Alsatian riesling before you head into the main event. Once you're ready for the mains, order the lemongrass and chilli chicken and the Vietnamese shaking beef, which literally melts in your mouth. A strong female restauranteur calls for a strong female winemaker, so when it comes to the vino, bring a bottle of this juicy Beaujolais - with its juicy, fruit driven palate, is perfect to balance out the spicy Viet flavours." - Jackson

"If you can make it to Hell of the North in the backstreets of Fitzroy on one of their BYO nights - Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday - you're in for a treat. The $25 corkage is worth it to experience one of your favourite bottles paired with superb French-inspired food, great glassware and a chat with wine-maniac-owner Mark Grixti. When it comes to vino, stick with French or French-inspired. Match some of Hell’s pungent sauces of their meat dishes - Rhone or Rhone-inspired is our tip, like this divine drop." - Beth

"I've been going to Thai Thani for years now and it's still an all-time fave. It's a family business and the food is a celebration of Northern Thai food. The vibe is chill, the service is friendly and the food never disappoints. Order the koi soi (chicken curry soup with egg noodles), which is the most authentic version I've had outside of Thailand. If you've got room for more, try the BBQ lamb rack, marinated in Thai herbs and coconut oil, plus their seafood pad cha with ginger and peppercorns. And when it comes to the wine, rosé is the way to go. My pick? This French best-seller - the minerality and strawberry are great with both the delicate seafood and red meat." - Hannah

"This vibrant Lebanese restaurant is my go-to for a combination of whole food and soul food (healthy and hearty together at last), and is well-loved among different friend groups for their vegan-friendly menu and great BYO policy. Their beautiful, leafy courtyard deserves an honourable mention, but in my opinion nothing beats going on a cold night, sitting inside and ordering some deliciously rustic share plates to pair with your favourite wines. I’d recommend the arnabeet tahina (fried cauliflower with dukkha and tahini), kebé dumplings (pumpkin wheat cases filled with veggies and onion), and fattè bi lahem (slow cooked lamb with pita chips). Paired with a light to medium bodied red or a textured white and you’re ready to rock n roll, baby! - Katy

"It’s the kind of restaurant that suits a third date - the one where you’re a little more relaxed but still keen to impress - or a small group of your closest friends to chew the fat and share a meal. The menu is seasonal and sourced from a mix of the best Italian DOP and local Aussie produce. I can never go past gnocchi. Just can’t do it. But if you think you’re better than me and can bypass those potato balls of bliss, I challenge you to go past the gnocco fritto. It’s basically warm puffy bits of fried bread with pork fat, that you tear open, stuff with cured meats, and shovel in your mouth where it melts into an orgasm of fat and carbs. Keep it cruisy Monday - Wednesday for BYO and take at least two bottles of this Tuscan Chianti to have the full Italian experience." - Sharon
